Willow?

Hi, can rabbits eat Willow branches from Willow trees? Or do they have to be dried out like the ones in pets at home?

I was wondering because we have a willow tree in the garden and thought we could trim it and give them some of the branches.

Yes rabbits can eat willow.

I regularly give ours some.

However willow does have a type of aspirin in the bark (in fact it was the original basis of aspirin) and I would say not to give more than a couple of handfuls at a time as I did once have a bun who had a a touch of stassis after a lot of willow and I wondered if the aspirin had affected the stomach.

They can have them either fresh or dried

Bunnie has had GI Stasis twice now and both times when it was coming we noticed she started chewing her willow sticks! And we did read somewhere that it has a pinkiller in!

Bunnie never chews any of her chew toys except when getting poorly tummy

Is it strange? coz everyone else is saying thier rabbits got stasis and ours haven't at all.

We have a pair of massive willow trees in our lane and I do cut and feed new wood and leaves to ours now and again. We have never had any ill effects and they always eat with gusto.

I think that the buns aren't getting ill because they are chewing willow sticks, it could be the buns are already on the way to getting poorly and so eat the willow sticks to stop the pain. Although obviously the willow sticks may not agree with every buns tums! But with Bunnie she chews to help with pain!

Bunnie eats them only when she gets ill so it must be to try stop her tummy pain.

She obviously knows the willow sticks contain stuff to help/stop the pain to a certain extent so she starts to chew!
