Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Why is my bunny’s nose cracking?

Louis26

New Kit
My bunny is 5 months old, recently his nose has developed cracks and scabs. He’s been sneezing, no discharge but also itching a lot. I have taken him to the vet and he got a diagnosis of scabies..ears are not affected, can’t see any other part of his body be affected..I need a second opinion, does scabies present like this?

The vet has given him an ivermectin injection and has suggested one shot once a week, for 3 weeks. He has had the one shot and it’s been a few days but there’s no difference yet.

The photos were taken a bit early on, it looks worse than this right now almost as if the scabs are going to fall off and he’s going to lose his nose..please help

I am not qualified to give you an opinion on your bunny. Yet I hope your bunny responds to vet treatment. Is your vet rabbit saavy?

Has your rabbit been vaccinated against myxo and RHD? If so, was this recently?

A scabby nose on a rabbit is often indicative of myxomatosis.
Scabies is highly contagious, including to humans. You should have received suitable advice from your vet on managing the condition.

No he hasn’t, I’m in Pakistan where no one is so rabbit savvy. Tbh I’ve looked up the signs of myxo and he has none of these:

  • Swollen, puffy eyes (often severe, sometimes eyes can’t open)
  • Swelling around the face, ears, genitals
  • Thickened, swollen skin (not just scabs)
  • Very obvious illness: low energy, not eating, fever
He is eating fine, has energy, is doing binkies etc. His breeder also said this is more likely scabies than anything else.. im just wondering if it is scabies is he getting the right treatment for it?

Could it be Rabbit Syphilis. Is he ok underneath? IF it is Syphilis he would need Penicillin injections.

To answer your question - I had a quick look on the internet and Ivermectin is an appropriate treatment for scabies in rabbits. I would follow your vet's advice for the treatment schedule.

Ivermectin is commonly used for other parasitic infestations in rabbits eg mites. In that case, it's usually a weekly dose for 3 weeks.
