Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
If the infection is in the middle ear, rather than the outer ear, I would like to have oral or injectable abx in addition to the drops.I think the drops are the antibiotics, I'm not home atm to check the brand. Hopefully the RVC will also be able to provide further guidance on treatment as well. I already said to the vet that I wouldn't want to do an ear operation re the lump regardless due to her age so it would just be about management.
This would be my view too regarding abx. I'm pleased also that the vet has diagnosed exactly what the cause of the problem is. That's helpful in identifying how to make her better. If the infection is in the middle ear, rather than the outer ear, I would like to have oral or injectable abx in addition to the drops.
I am glad she is doing well, yet I am also confused why they will not give antibiotics Unless they feel the infection has been walled off like an abscess so the antibiotics would not be able to get to the infection.Got some advice from the RVC today, they have said that they would not use antibiotics as they wouldn't make a difference. I was a bit confused by this if I am honest. They said that the only way to truly fix the issue is an operation, which I have already decided not to do. Lilac isn't displaying any symptoms any more and seems back to herself. The vet is prescribing some meds for if she does get neurological symptoms again (apologies can't remember the name) and we are to see how we get on.
I agree, they are the experts. Lets hope she stays bright & happy for a long time yetI have very mixed feelings and admit I'm a little confused! The vet read me the email word for word so I know it's not a misinterpretation or anything like that, and I will defer to them with their level of knowledge compared to me. She is absolutely fine in herself now, the symptoms were bad for 24 hours or so and now seem to be resolved. I'm going to follow their advice but keep a close eye on her and if I'm concerned she will be straight back to the vet! The vet did say to think about the op if I want to but I personally think it would be borderline cruel to put her through that. I accept that without the op I may have to make a tricky choice at some stage sooner rather than later but I think it's the better decision for her at this time.
