• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vibes for Lilac :(

I think the drops are the antibiotics, I'm not home atm to check the brand. Hopefully the RVC will also be able to provide further guidance on treatment as well. I already said to the vet that I wouldn't want to do an ear operation re the lump regardless due to her age so it would just be about management.

If the infection is in the middle ear, rather than the outer ear, I would like to have oral or injectable abx in addition to the drops.

This would be my view too regarding abx. I'm pleased also that the vet has diagnosed exactly what the cause of the problem is. That's helpful in identifying how to make her better.

I'm very glad she doesn't have EC. I hope you can get her ear infection under control, and that the RVC have some additional advice on how to best help her. It's promising that she's feeling better. Sending her lots of healing vibes ❤️

Thanks all. I'm actually away this weekend so she's with her dad, but he says she's being very good! He normally leaves medications to me so he's not as confident but apart from hiding in an awkward spot so he couldn't pick her up I don't think he's had any problems.

Got some advice from the RVC today, they have said that they would not use antibiotics as they wouldn't make a difference. I was a bit confused by this if I am honest. They said that the only way to truly fix the issue is an operation, which I have already decided not to do. Lilac isn't displaying any symptoms any more and seems back to herself. The vet is prescribing some meds for if she does get neurological symptoms again (apologies can't remember the name) and we are to see how we get on.

I am glad she is doing well, yet I am also confused why they will not give antibiotics Unless they feel the infection has been walled off like an abscess so the antibiotics would not be able to get to the infection.
Sending vibes Lilac continues to do well.

That does seem like unexpected advice to not use antibiotics. I understand your not wanting to put her through surgery at her age, though. I'm glad she's not displaying symptoms anymore and is back to herself; that's really good ❤️

Are you feeling ok about stopping the antibiotics? I ask cos I think I'd have mixed feelings...pleased their bodies don't have to be on antibiotics if its unnecessary versus wondering why she is doing so well after a relatively short period of treatment. The main thing of course is that she is doing well  Its a huge op apparently, I would only do it for a robust bun

I have very mixed feelings and admit I'm a little confused! The vet read me the email word for word so I know it's not a misinterpretation or anything like that, and I will defer to them with their level of knowledge compared to me. She is absolutely fine in herself now, the symptoms were bad for 24 hours or so and now seem to be resolved. I'm going to follow their advice but keep a close eye on her and if I'm concerned she will be straight back to the vet! The vet did say to think about the op if I want to but I personally think it would be borderline cruel to put her through that. I accept that without the op I may have to make a tricky choice at some stage sooner rather than later but I think it's the better decision for her at this time.

I agree, they are the experts. Lets hope she stays bright & happy for a long time yet ❤️
