Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Turmeric supplements

Hi!
Does anyone have any experience with turmeric supplements? I used to give my buns the Sherwood tablets but I’m now looking for a liquid supplement to give by syringe - I’ve found the ‘nature’s own’ alcohol free turmeric liquid and am debating it - has anyone used it or heard of it used for arthritis or inflammation? I’m going to consult the vet on Monday anyway.
Thank you!

I was going to advise that you consult your vet about this. I researched this some time ago (for humans not rabbits). From what I can remember Turmeric contains Curcumin and it's considered that it's the Curcumin which has benefits for arthritis. It's possible that different Turmeric supplements contain varying amounts of Curcumin. I remember also that to have the best efffect, it should be taken together with black pepper.

However, people with certain health conditions should not take it (I couldn't) and also it should not be taken with several types of medication. That's for humans and I would want to get accurate confirmation that it's OK for my rabbits.

Golden paste (turmeric, black pepper and some form of oil or fat base) is used for arthritis in humans, dogs & horses, and has some merits - but it also has contraindications, so isn't suitable for everyone. I've never heard of it being used for rabbits, and rabbits have a different metabolism and digestion (eg they need fibre and not fats). There are regular forms of arthritis treatment available from your vet, including anti-inflammatory meds (like Metacam), plus physio and laser type options. I would ask about those and any other recommendations they have, including asking about turmeric. I wouldn't personally use golden paste / turmeric (or any other supplement) for a rabbit unless it was specifically recommended by a rabbit-savvy vet.

Hi! I’ve tried turmeric supplements myself (for joint inflammation, not for buns though), and honestly I found it pretty helpful as a natural anti-inflammatory when used consistently. I think the liquid form sounds like a good idea, especially if it’s alcohol-free and easier to give by syringe. It’s great that you’re checking with the vet first, since dosing and safety are key - especially for rabbits. Personally, I like that turmeric is a more natural option, but I’d still keep an eye on any changes just to be safe.
