• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi

One of my Dutchies, Lia has been recently diagnosed (we had x-rays a couple of weeks ago). Some days she manages to get up and about, but the last few days she’s been struggling with her back legs, but does move about using her front ones. I just wanted to know if anyone has experience of this and can offer advice. She’s eating and pooping fine and I’m cleaning her side every day. She’s a house rabbit.

I have read a few posts sort of related to this and I wouldn’t keep her going if she really had no quality of life. However, she does at the moment. My husband has adapted the cage which is their base, so she can easily reach water, etc., so we’ve done practical stuff, I really just wondered what things I can do to make her comfortable :)

There may be some old posts with hints & tips for disabled rabbits. Hugo's There used to run a sanctuary for some very disabled rabbits, so maybe look at her old posts as a starting point (search under 'Members' on the green header)? It's not really something that's been brought up recently on here, hence the lack of responses.

The other option is to look at a specialist group for EC rabbits (I can't remember it's name), but they all had rabbits with varying disabilities due to the EC parasite - which would often include the loss of use of back legs (so although it's a different cause, you are dealing with similar issues).

There's this EC suport group on FaceBook:
I don't have FB, so can't say how relevant it is to you.

Thank you - I’ll take a look 😊

Twenty plus years ago, before I joined RU, I had a Dutch rabbit who lost the use of his right rear leg. He was treated for EC and got medicam for inflammation. He would scoot himself along on his other legs, yet from lack of movement the bad leg became stiff and was more in his way than a benefit. His muscles atrophied too.
I know now that I should have done home physical therapy by gently moving his leg and perhaps supporting him in a sling to help him hop. He was otherwise bright and ate well.
