• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spencer again

Thanks everyone, I managed to find their vaccination records, they’d been tidied away.

This is Spencer’s, and it doesn’t look right to me.

I know the vets will need to take a look, and we won’t know whether their deaths had anything to do with RHD2, but why would they get the same thing twice?

Oh no, it looks like they have given the sane injection twice instead of RHD2??

Oh dear, it looks as though there has been a serious error

The other vaccine they should have had is either FILAVAC https://www.harcourt-brown.co.uk/media/documents/filavac.doc

or ERAVAC https://www.harcourt-brown.co.uk/media/documents/eravac-uk-datasheet-0.pdf

The Nobivac Myxo-RHD does NOT offer any protection against RHD2, only RHD1

I should have double checked, I should have noticed

NO, you are NOT the Veterinary Professional. You have no cause to blame yourself, although I understand that you feel responsible. You are certainly not. It looks as though you, your wife and the late Frank and Spencer have been badly let down.

'Human error' happens, in some circumstances the price paid is catastrophic. It is essential that those involved (the Vet(S)) in what appears to have occurred here take full responsibility and put in place new procedures to make sure the same thing can NEVER happen again.

Once again, I feel so sad for you and for your wife

Oh my :'( how could they make such a mistake?!

I think I'd be having a serious word with management regarding not only the loss, but money spent due to their mistake :/ I hope you don't mind me saying that.

And I don't always check my vaccination cards, so please don't blame yourself :'( a vet should know what they're doing.

Only other thing... Is the other vaccination card the same? Or does it have RHD2 twice instead? Could just be they put the sticker on the wrong vaccination card? :(

I feel If this RHD2 confirmed I think the RWAF should be informed so they can alert vets of this. I also think the vet in question should at least pay the treatment costs

Both rabbits vaccination books are the same, they both always had any vets procedure together.

I can’t believe this, the vet had to look in the book to put the details in, how could they not see they were giving the same vaccination twice?

Unbelievable, I'm honestly so angry. Not sure if that's a mistake or just pure incompetence :/

I'm so sorry you're going through this :'(

I am going to wait before I do or say anything. I need to wait until the emotion has passed, I will take the books to show them, but I’m keeping hold of them, along with all the invoices for treatment etc from the OOH vets.

I will also look into the correct channels to report this, if this has happened to our two, who else could it have happened to?

God, I had to walk through pets at home to get to the vets, there were other people in the waiting room.

If I’d know id have been able to be more careful and take precautions

I’m so sorry you lost Spencer [emoji17] I’m absolutely devastated for you, losing two bunnies within four days is heartbreaking [emoji17]

Sadly it looks like the vet messed up and gave the Myxi/rhd1 vaccine twice instead of the Rhd2.

A similar thing happened to me last month. My bunnies were seen by a locum vet for their Rhd2 boosters. When I looked at the vaccination cards when I got home I saw they’d been given nobivac again. I was absolutely furious because I made it very clear when I booked the appointment that I wanted the filavac. I then had a very anxious two week wait until they could be vaccinated again.

I was also angry with myself. I thought why didn’t I double check before she gave the vaccine? However, it hadn’t even entered my mind the vet could make such a mistake. I’d previously made it clear which one they needed and even a cursory look at their records would show which vaccine they were due.

I feel dreadful for you. You did everything in your power to look after you boys and keep them safe and well but you’ve been badly let down by your vet [emoji17]

Until the PM results are back I think the store should take ALL Rabbits off sale, including any in the Adoption Section. No baby Rabbit sold from PAH has received a RHD2 Vaccine

I know my vets also provide vet cover for the animals in the store, I do wonder whether they will tell the store, I’m going to have to walk back through there when I collect Spencer later.

It was the vet we first saw when we got the boys who told us that the store had had an outbreak of ringworm and got the store manager to agree to pay for their treatment.

Sadly the surgery seems to have a revolving door of vets, in a little under a year we’ve seen 3 or 4 different vets there.

This was when they had just been neutered.

They were awesome chaps, if it turns out that it was RHD2, I do t know how I’ll feel, it would be little comfort knowing that their deaths might have been prevented if the vet who did the second vaccination had given them the right stuff, or if we had checked their vaccination records more closely

Well I am only giving my personal opinion, but I would call the Vets again today, tell them of what you fear may have happened and that if they are not prepared to alert the PAH store today you will.

Of course it cannot be taken as a certainty that RHD2 is involved until the PM results are obtained, but in this situation I feel that it should be handled as if it is 'worst case scenario' until proved otherwise.
