• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying Chika and Cinnamon!

Sent our babies to the vet an hour ago with a packed lunch (their favorite greens, hay, and pellets). The vet seems to be very knowledgeable, and they gave us a printout of some post-op care information. I'm a little nervous, but not as much after going. My sister came with me to drop them off, and she seems less nervous as well. They did mention that they would be sending home Bene-bac for digestive health, and I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about that?

I was also wondering how long until I'll be able to pick up the rabbit safely? They don't like it, so I'm avoiding it at all costs to avoid stress. But when will it be okay to try to pick them up again? It's how we clip their nails, but I'm willing to sacrifice nail length for a healthy incision healing process.

Please send your vibes. I didn't realize how much I love these two little goofballs. This is the first time in a year we've been separated, and I miss them already.

I'll be thinking of you all.

You will need to pick them up to check their spay wounds.

Benebac is a US brand of pet probiotic, that guinea pig people often recommend. Although I personally never found it anything special when I managed to get hold of it once.

I hope all goes well with their spay and that they are soon home and recovering with you and your sister.

In my view a probiotic in this scenario is unnecessary, but it won't do any harm either.

Sending lots of vibes for bunnies, you, and your sister. I never used benebac post spay and would not force it if they resist taking it.
Keep them in a confined area, check their incisions twice a day, give pain meds, and monitor them closely.

Thank you all so much ❤️❤️❤️

They're home and safe! Everything went well. Yesterday I gave them a bit of Critical Care but they really hated it. Today though, they're eating on their own, so I'm not going to syringe feeding them. They're favoring pellets over greens and hay but as long as they're eating I don't really care. I'm giving them meloxicam by straddling them between my legs on the floor, and it works pretty well! I've seen very good big poos today and yesterday from Cinny, a bit on the smaller side from Chika but nothing too worrying. I'm still holding off on picking them up though because I'm worried I'm too nervous to do it cleanly, like if I hesitate they'll have a chance to jump out my arms and it'll hurt them 😕

I tried to get good pictures because they spend most of the day snuggling together, but they're absolute ninjas when it comes to the camera 🤣

Awww, your buns got through their spay ❤️ Lovely photos. So pleased they are recovering so well. I picked a good time to look at your thread

Brilliant news. I agree, don't bother them with syringe-feeding if they're eating by themselves. I use the method of having them between my knees to medicate and to clip nails and find it works well.

Re picking them up, would they tolerate you lifting their front paws off the ground and leaving their rear paws in situ? You could then be ready to look at their wounds.

Have they got a post-op check booked with the vet?

Okay, they're absolutely fine now! They've been doing some loud bunstruction, mostly in the form of trying to move the gates and dragging their litter box all over creation 🤣. They're back to eating normally, too, eating all of their greens and most of their hay. They also calmed down enough for me to do a quick pick at their insision, which is looking dry and shrively (so good I guess). I couldn't be more pleased; they're raring to go! The only issue is now keeping them quiet while we finish their hutch. They really want to get back outside so we'll have to hurry on their house.

Thank you all for your brilliant suggestions and vibes and support ❤️❤️❤️. I've said it before, ya'll are my favorite people for a reason!

I liked reading that both bunnies are doing very well and they are rearranging their area. Sending lots of vibes that they will have long and healthy lives.
