• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing while eating

So one of my buns sneezes when he eats and drinks. We're thinking it's mainly because he goes into intense hoover mode when he eats.

When he eats hay he sticks his head right in there like he's never eaten hay before 😂. He's so hyper focused when he's eating. We keep the hay topped up though and both the buns are good hay eaters. He's the same when we feed them pellets, so we've started scatter feeding and trying a wobble feeder to slow him down a bit but he still seems to sneeze. He also does it with grass, as they have access to the lawn, munches it like he'll never see grass again.

They both had a check up at the vet recently and I mentioned it to her. She's a rabbit savvy vet and is really good. She checked him over and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. She just said obviously if we see any kind of discharge to bring him back in asap but we don't.

He does it with water too, he drinks it like he'll never see it again but not all the time. I think it's when he drinks after eating, he's still in hyper focus mode and seems to stick his head in the bowl and guzzle the water. We've now been keeping the bowls more shallow to prevent this.

We're just a little worried as he seems to sneeze a few times when he's like this. Sometimes it's right after eating or sometimes it'll be in between. So for example, we tried the wobble feeder earlier and he's still trying to figure it out, so he was rather slow. He did a couple of sneezes and he hadn't eaten a pellet at this point.

His brother doesn't do it at all either, just him but his brother also doesn't eat THAT intensely. We just wanna make sure our lil boy is ok 🩵
