• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Saar's tumour (was Getting Saar spayed?)

I've heard back from the vets about the Panacur and they recommend waiting for the test results next week, which makes sense.

I did have a question: since she's already drinking and peeing a lot, would it be better not to give her dandelion leaves, since they're diuretic? I'm not really sure how that works? I think diuretic stuff makes you pee a lot, right?

I asked Frances this years back & she said yes, they are fine - useful in fact as they help to flush toxins out

Oh & yes, if they are planning to test for EC too (over here it isn't included in standard blood work) then it makes sense to wait to see what the results come back with. On a positive note she is obviously feeling ok, based on her behaviour. Its poor you that has to shoulder the burden of worry

Ah, that's good to know it gets FHB approval. Thank you for letting me know.

I'm not actually 100% sure they'll test for it, so I'll ask when I drop her off next Wednesday. But, yes, she seems very happy, so hopefully that means that whatever is going on isn't making her feel unwell.

Fresh Dandelion greens were my bridge bunny Raven’s favorite thing and I worried about calcium in them, yet was told the water in them offsets my concerns for calcium content and he could keep enjoying the dandelion greens.

Aww, I remember how you'd always get little Raven his beloved dandelion greens. That's what I've understood, too, yeah, that because of the water content, calcium isn't really an issue in greens. I'm glad that meant Raven could keep enjoying his ❤️

Best of luck on Wednesday for your lovely foodie girlie.
Aww, thank you, tulsi. I'm pretty nervous.

Yay. The forum has finally let me in, which I am very glad about as we (the buns & me) want to send Saar lots of good luck & well wishes for tomorrows appointment

We've just dropped Saar and Casper off at the vets, so we'll see what they'll have found when we pick them up this afternoon. She's been grinding her teeth, so she does seem to be in pain now, poor girl :( I weighed her on Sunday and she'd lost another 70 grams (I'm not sure how to convert that for our US friends... it's 2.47 ounces, apparently?) since the Monday before. She's only 1.86 kg (4.1 lbs) now. Sophie was 2.1kg (4.63 lbs) at her lowest, and Saar is bigger than she was...

I'm really sorry she has lost some more weight & has been grinding her teeth too too :( Really hoping they can find something treatable for your lovely girl

Thank you so much, j&b.

We've just picked them up, and we're not really sure what exactly is going on yet, but there's something with her stomach :( The vet said her bloods show high levels of inflammation, and that her stomach wall is much thicker than it should be in one spot. He said they don't have much experience with this in bunnies, though, so he wanted to have another vet look at the ultrasound, too, and discuss it with the other vets and look in some books and learn some more. I always appreciate it when a vet is honest about not knowing something rather than pretending to be all-knowing, so I'm okay with waiting while he looks into it. He should have a plan by Friday, he said. I asked what it could be, and he said it could be a tumour, but that he really can't say for certain at this point.

He also said that, unfortunately, he doesn't feel like it's safe to give her pain medication while we don't know what is wrong with her stomach, because even injectible pain relief will affect her stomach (the stomach acid, apparently), so that's not ideal at all, though I do understand it :( I forgot to ask how this would explain all her drinking and peeing, but maybe drinking water soothes her stomach somehow, I'm not sure... I do find it amazing that she eats so much while her stomach is unwell. He said that she might not be absorbing enough/anything, and that that's why she's losing weight.

I very much hope it's something treatable, but I'm so worried about her. She's only been with Casper and me for just over two months, but I love her so much, and she and Casper are already becoming such good friends.

I had a question... I've been giving Saar more pellets and Fibafirst (I thought I'd try it with her because I like the ingredients better than the pellets Casper gets) to try to keep her weight up, but as a consequence she's not eating much hay. I don't want her to get dental problems on top of everything else, so I was wondering how to best balance that? Maybe I could get her some alfalfa hay, would that be a good idea?

I'm really very sorry to hear there are problems with Saar's stomach, that makes sense with her wanting to eat so much & still losing weight. i imagine her eating & drinking habits are her way of self medicating. On a positive note its good the exact problem area has been identified. I absolutely agree with you that it is good practice of your vets to discuss & research before coming up with an action plan.

Are her poops still good? Do you know I really think because its her stomach causing all these problems I'd be reluctant to change much without a vet discussion. I think you need a "for now" diet plan approved by your vets & then when they have a plan that might change. If I had to choose I'd go alfalfa over fibre first as its less processed. I think it'd be useful to know a current assessment of her teeth, any risks of free feeding & what foods would be preferable.

So many vibes for you all

I'm really sorry to hear that the vet found something in Saar's tummy, but very good that they are doing investigation into it, they sound very thorough. I'm not so up to date with bunnies diets these days, but J & B's suggestion sounds sensible to me. Sending loads of vibes for your girl, and many more for you and Casper as you both look after her xx

Thank you so much, j&b ❤️ Yeah, it's good we at least know where the problem is now. I did ask the vet about her diet, and how to keep her weight on, but he said it's difficult and to keep doing what I'm doing. But you're right, with it being her stomach, it'd be best to be very cautious about making any changes, so I'll see if he has a better answer for me on Friday when he maybe knows a bit more. Getting her teeth assessed is a good idea, too, yeah. Her poops are good, though not as great as they were, so I would like her to eat more fibre.

Thank you so much, too, PM, for being sorry and for the vibes for her, and Casper and me, too ❤️
