• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ripped stitches

Her antibiotics is only 5 days I feel like it’s not long enough
Was yesterday day 1 of the abx? Did the vet diagnose infection from observation, especially of the discharge, or did she send a sample of the discharge off for analysis? It's possible I think that the 5 day course will be enough, but obviously you will need to watch carefully for signs that it's still present. Getting the wound to start to heal properly will be a good start.

Lots of vibes for her. It must be both painful and uncomfortable, despite the fact that she is moving around as normal.

It was day 1 on Monday but I’m struggling really hard to give it to her :( I just tried the burrito method and she slid out of her tshirt and the blanket so now I’m not able to put the tshirt back on and she didn’t even take the medicine I’m so stressed and I just can’t do it I don’t know what to do

Is there someone else who you trust to help you? When we've had to give our pets medication, I would always hold them and teach my sibling how to administer it. They weren't very animal savvy (which is why I was the holder), but they were good at following instructions, so we never had a problem. Maybe also try putting up a playpen before holding her? That way, she can't run away before you're finished?

Big batch of vibes for Pearl, I hope she gets better soon.

It sounds as though it's the taste of the abx that she's objecting to, not the fact that it's syringe given. Is it Baytril? Getting someone else to assist is a good idea. Have you tried taking her to somewhere in your house, which is unfamiliar to her? That sometimes works, because then they are concerned about the place and are wary of struggling free.

I know many have success with the burrito method, but I never have and the bunny always has slipped free.

I thought it was the taste too she acts a lot different when giving the pain relief, yes I do believe it is baytril. I’m going to give her a break and once my mum gets home we’ll give it a go! Am I able to ask the vets for more antibiotics? I’ve wasted a lot and don’t think I will finish the 5days thank you

Yes, of course you can ask for more abx, if you explain what's happened. You do need to hold her firmly, otherwise she will sense she can get away, but obviously be careful not to hurt her when she struggles.

Good luck.

The length of times varies by Ithe type of abx and how effective they are in controlling the infection. However, it is possible she may need a second course to eradicate the infection fully. I would call ask the vet. Does she have a follow up vet appointment?

Sending more vibes for her full recovery.

You poor thing, I can imagine how stressed you are! I'd definitely recommend getting someone to hold her while you do the syringing. It's just so hard to get a good angle otherwise. You can also try lightly covering her eyes with your other hand, so she can't see the syringe coming.

No there is no follow up appointment, I’m hoping to call them up tomorrow and see what they say! She has manager to figure out how to remove the rabbit onesie thing so im hoping she doesn’t chew tonight!

I finally managed to get her to have it today with banana but tomorrow I’ll definitely try with someone to syringe it! Thank you x

She’s gone in today and had Lazer done on her wound, more antibiotics and more pain relief also been given a cone I’m hoping this is the last time and she can finally heal!

The cone will probably be really annoying for her, but it does seem to be the best option at the moment. Make sure that she can access food and water while wearing it, and you may have to check her bottom as she won't be able to reach to keep clean or eat the ceacals.

She’s not happy with the cone or onesie, she has 2 different pain killers now and a higher dose of antibiotics. The cone is helping me amazing I mixed the antibiotic with some banana and squirted it on the cone she licked it all up!!! Praying she gets better!
