• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Raven needs vibes, falling, circling update March 11

Chloramphenicol (CMP) is a very strong abx that requires special handling by you so that you don't expose yourself to the medication. This has the potential for causing an irreversible fatal anemia in humans. Your pharmacist should tell you what precautions to take, if not, ask.

I hated having to use this on Mimzy and was so glad when the round was completed. I had to use disposable gloves and cleaned up fanatically after dosing him each time. It doesn't pose the same risk to the rabbit.

Keep in mind that if the EC has really taken hold, Raven's head may still not stop tilting even after the infective period has passed. Mimzy had residual tilt of about 40 degrees (90 if he was tired) for the rest of his life, but it didn't seem to bother him and he learned to hop again despite it. During surgical appointments the anesthesia would affect the tilt so that he'd be right side up again, but it would always return.

I really hope the new treatment will help Raven. Many healing vibes on the way to you. xxxxx
Thank you for letting me know you had success with Mimzy and sharing the risks.
The vet already told me about the risk to humans which is why we tried other abx first. The pharmacist recommended gloves to be on the safe side.
Raven likes the flavor I ordered, so he takes it well.
I had a few head tilt bunnies over the years, including Raven, and some had a residual tilt and others did not., though none as severe as Mimzy's.
Since it is no longer in wide use, it can be effective against bacteria that is resistant to other abx.
It is upsetting to think of Raven's options if this does not work.
I am still struggling with the news I got Wednesday about the tumors on Heidi's forearm.
He needs lots of prayers to St Francis and positive vibes.

Thank you for asking.
He is only slightly better after 9 days of abx. He us still wanting to curve to the right, though he can straighten and will go to the left.
He continues to eat his greens some hay and his berry loop treats and I give him a syringe feed every day to keep his weight.
He is stable for now, yet I worry about his qol if he gets worse.

Sending lots of further improvement vibes for your boy. It's good that he's stable for now and I doubt whether the curving to the right will upset him very much if at all. He most likely will just accept it as it is.

I appreciate your support.

I agree with Omi, while it's hard for us to see our bunnies go wonky, the tilt can sometimes remain and in the rabbit's perspective, they feel as if they are upright and straight because their balance center is "reprogramned" by EC to seem correct. My rabbit savvy vet assured me that while Mimzy looked uncomfortable, he was actually okay even though he had one eye up and the other down.
I did have to keep the "undereye" clean and moisturized however as it rested on the ground often, and the lower ear would get terrible wax plugs in it. I also was instructed to give massages along his neck and back to ease any muscle tension.

I hope that time will give Raven a more normal position eventually. This is a disease that can take months to work through. ((((((((healing vibes)))))))) xxxxx

Thank you MimMumz. I needed to hear he can still have a good qol. I keep thinking about another bunny I had who got worse so slowly I did not notice how much it impacted her qol.

I am sorry there has not been any improvement. Maybe when it becomes obvious he needs another dental you could re-evaluate the situation as obviously having to have another GA for the essential dental work he needs due to his complex dental problems is going to be a major issue. For now if he’s happy within himself then I think it’s best to just take things one day at a time. This is how I would approach the situation anyway. Sending lots more vibes xx

Thank you Jane. I will do as you say and try not to think to far ahead.
His next dental is Jan 23. Since they changed his ga protocol he has been doing well, though it is hard to know if the ga will exacerbate his latest setback. Raven is a fighter.

I am 100% certain that you will always do what is in his best interests x

Mimzy had several dentals after his illness. He was 3 years old when he tilted. He lived, and I believe happily, to 10 years old. Adjustments to his living quarters and daily routines were necessary of course, but I always did whatever I could to keep him comfortable.
Every bunny is different. I hope for the best for Raven. ❤️

Thank you for sharing. This is good to know.

lots more vibes for your shiny black soldier. Are little shoulder massages still recommended for head tilt buns? I know Noodley had them. She actually made huge progress from a 180 degree tilt to the tiniest bit. I hope his recovery continues
