• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Raven needs vibes, falling, circling update March 11

I couldn't imagine even day to day rabbit care whilst battling Covid. Sorry to hear you are not well also. Healing vibes doubled for all of you and on the way forthwith. xxxxx

Raven got his monthly dental today and he did well with ga and recovered quickly.
I spoke to vet because a few days after he improved with baytril and supportive care, he started to relapse and circle again, with minor head tracking even though he was still on the baytril.
We are changing back to the sulfatrim abx which helped him in May and Aug to see if it can help him again. If he does not improve, vet suggested a different abx.
My Raven is a tough little bunny and he ate a treat as soon as he came home.

Sorry to hear that he has a relapse of his vestibular symptoms. Has the Vet suggested any further diagnostics or is it considered not to be in his best interests to do that ?
Sending lots more vibes for him x

Aw, poor wee bub. I'm sending healing vibes his way. Baytril is a very strong abx but the bacteria may be resistant. I hope a treatment can he found that will help him. xxxxx

Vet said doing a cat scan or mri would be hard on Raven and if it revealed a cyst or tumor there is not much that could be done, so why risk it. Since abx helped in past, I hope they will help again.

Thank you.
Yes, it may be resistant bacteria, so that is why we are going to abx that helped in past, and possibly to an old abx that fell out of use in humans due to side effect that can work on resistant bacteria.

After being on the Sulfatrim abx for a week, Raven began circling, head tracking, and he had nystygmus in his eye. I gave him his medicam, and meclezine and I called vet to try the other antibiotic he suggested last week. The abx is not commercially available, so it will be compounded at the specialty pharmacy. I hope it will be ready tomorrow so I can get him started on it quickly.
He improves with abx, then improvement stops and his vestibular symptoms return. I hope this abx can help my little shiny black bunny.

Inspector Morse, KCG,
Thank you.
His head was curved and tilted last night. The eye movements stopped, yet he still was tracking his head and he was leaning to one side. Once he got settled, he took the syringe feed quite well. Earlier in the evening he ate his dandelion greens and his favorite treat, so meclizine must be helping him feel less dizzy. He got fluids too and he got medicam before I took Heidi to vet.
I will call the specialty pharmacy in the morning so I can start the different abx as soon as possible. I hope he remains stable until that can take effect.

What is the new abx called ?

I hope he will keep eating enough to keep his GI tract ticking over. Sending lots more vibes for him x

Sending lots of vibes for Raven. I hope you are able to start the new abx soon and especially that it helps.

IM, Omi,
Thank you.
The pharmacy got his abx ready just before they closed and Raven got his first dose. It is called Chloramphenicol which is no longer commercially made so it needed to be compounded for Raven at the specialty pharmacy.
Now we need extra vibes that this abx will address his infection and keep it away long term.

I really hope they will work 🫂 xx

Chloramphenicol (CMP) is a very strong abx that requires special handling by you so that you don't expose yourself to the medication. This has the potential for causing an irreversible fatal anemia in humans. Your pharmacist should tell you what precautions to take, if not, ask.

I hated having to use this on Mimzy and was so glad when the round was completed. I had to use disposable gloves and cleaned up fanatically after dosing him each time. It doesn't pose the same risk to the rabbit.

Keep in mind that if the EC has really taken hold, Raven's head may still not stop tilting even after the infective period has passed. Mimzy had residual tilt of about 40 degrees (90 if he was tired) for the rest of his life, but it didn't seem to bother him and he learned to hop again despite it. During surgical appointments the anesthesia would affect the tilt so that he'd be right side up again, but it would always return.

I really hope the new treatment will help Raven. Many healing vibes on the way to you. xxxxx
