• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit with huge kidney stone..help!!

Hi,

I need advise please, my 6yr old lion head has been diagnosed with a massive kidney stone, the biggest they’ve ever seen apparently! This was diagnosed because he was having issues with his legs one of them is a bit played. This is the diagnosis after his X-ray yesterday, they said his legs are fine and that it is the kidney stone causing his leg issues due to the pain he’s in. They mentioned the option of removing his kidney, but this is high risk and they don’t know if the other kidney is ok. Today he has lost all mobility in his back legs! He is not insured so have no idea how much this kind of surgery and after care will cost, and also no idea if he will regain the use of his back legs! My vets are closed till Monday and I just need advise, he is really struggling on his bottom half but, the top half he’s fine hes eating, grooming and engaging. I don’t know what to do for the best 😢

I'm so sorry! I would imagine he needs a vet ASAP, easier said than done on a weekend, apart from the emergency vets. Hope you can find a solution 🤞

I would use the best rabbit vet you have and give him a chance. They should give you an estimate for the op before you decide whether go ahead. PTS would be another responsible option to consider under the circumstances. I'm surprised they allowed him home without some treatment.

Has he had any routine bloods done to check for the basics? (which would include liver and kidney function)

There's always a risk of losing them under anaesthetic, but I tend to go for the 'nothing left to lose' route, especially if doing nothing is really not a good option. 6 years is middle aged, so worth a go, imo. It sounds urgent, so don't leave it any longer than you really have to (ie tomorrow?). A blocked kidney will not only be very painful, it will also be causing other issues within the body. He will also have a better recovery the sooner it's done. He's still eating normally, so that's a good sign, but things can change very, very quickly in rabbits. If he deteriorates at all, he needs to see a vet immediately.
