• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit recovering from bloat- recovery advice?

Hi all!

My bunny is recovering from bloat, and is doing very well. He stayed at the vet for a day and I brought him home 4 days ago. He’s been eating and drinking and his energy is back! He is on meloxicam, paracetamol, maropitant (last dose was today) and enrofloxacin (for his infection). I’ve also been giving him critical care mixed with emeraid (around 13ml total) 5 times a day. His poos are also back to normal, and his energy is much better (begs for food!)

I’ve been giving him belly massages and his belly definitely feels a lot better ( more soft and doughy) but I do hear slight gurgling when massaging his belly. I was wondering if you all had any advice on how long it takes for a bun recovering to completely get back to normal? And should I decrease my critical care + emeraid dose now that he’s been eating hay consistently? Any other advice on recovery is much appreciated.

Add on: I’m concerned that feeding him emeraid even after he’s eating hay will do some harm- maybe too much calcium in his diet. Thoughts? Do I completely cut it off or slowly decrease it?

Thanks all!

Well done getting him to the vet in time for him to get treatment for the bloat.
What is he eating besides hay, critical care/Emipred?
Since he is on enrofloxacin for an infection, where is the infection?
Was he prescribed any gut motility drugs? They are often used for gi stasis once an obstruction is ruled out.
Extra fluids can be helpful too.
Since his belly is still gurgling, perhaps a follow up with your vet would be best.
