Prescribed buprenorphine - anything to be aware of?

New Kit
Hi everyone,

Brought my bun to the vet as I noticed some teeth grinding and mucus in poo this afternoon (he had a bad bloat last weekend and has been recovering). Vet mentioned that the mucus could be due to enrofloxacin (for snuffles). So we cut that off. It’s been a week and his symptoms are better already.

My bun got prescribed buprenorphine (0.24ml) every 8-12 hours for 3 days. (They mentioned if he is too tired then 2, if not 3). He also got paracetamol (0.28ml) every 12 hours for 5 days. And biolapis probiotics to take. *He is 1.41kg!

I wanted to ask for advice on caring for a bun that is taking buprenorphine- as I know it will make him drowsy! Any tips/ advice are many appreciated 😊

I’m also hesitant on feeding him- it is an opioid. Why did the vet administer such a strong pain medication?? He’s also 10 so i’m worried about the drowsiness and it slowing down his GI track

I appreciate your concern re the Buprenorphine, as yes it is known to cause drowsiness.

How is he generally now following the Bloat last weekend? Is he drowsy this afternoon following the Buprenorphine? How is his appetite?

The teeth grinding is indicative of pain, but I think if it were me, I would contact the vet and ask the reason why the Buprenorphine was considered necessary.

I hope you can get some reassurance from your vet.
