My rabbit has suddenly stopped eating pellets

New Kit
For the last few days (4 to be exact) she has suddenly stopped eating her pellets. She is eating different kinds of greens and hay but that’s all she is eating. I’m unsure whether or not i should be concerned. She is over weight anyway so hopefully she will loose some weight but I don’t want her to not be getting the right nutrients. FYI she isn’t a massive eater of hay.

Just came to me could it be her teeth??

It's definitely worth getting her teeth checked out. With mine, it was always the first sign of needing a dental. Pellets are very hard to crunch down on, and need a different jaw action to greens - so it makes sense.

The other thing to check is that the pellets haven't changed in some way - so maybe a different recipe from a new bag, or they have got damp / gone off if it's an old batch. So the usual thing then is to try a brand new (unopened) bag from a different source to see if that makes a difference.

Thank you I have contacted the vets to see if it’s worth me getting her checked so hopefully they can get me in.

I tried her on pellets she used to have and mixed it in with hers but no she’s still not had any. Thank you 😌

I would definitely get teeth checked although normally a rabbit would stop eating hay before pellets. Is she eating any more hay as a result of not eating pellets. I see you have mentioned she is normally not a great hay eater.

So I’m a full time worker so I don’t see her all the time so can’t watch to see if she is eating hay but I know she does in the mornings but yeah she isn’t a massive hay eater. I have 3 other rabbits and they eat way more than she does x

In addition to checking her teeth, have vet check her jaw and her ears because pain in those areas would cause her to not want to eat harder food like pellets. It is good she is still eating her greens because they will help to keep her gut moving and give her additional hydration.
Sending vibes your vet can diagnose the issue and start her on a treatment plan.

Thank you. I’ve got the vets to book her in for a check up. I will keep this updated 😌

Had the vets appointment this morning and just an update, everything is okay nothing was wrong with her teeth, jaw or ears. Everything else was also fine. Got her yearly vaccine while we were there. So my mind is at piece now. The vet said maybe she has just gone off the pellets she’s been having (she is a fussy rabbit, real queen 🤣) so I’ll change them (gradually) and see what happens 😌

Hello!! Strange one, but it’s not the SS pellets is it? I’m stressed as mine have gone off the ss pellets and I have just seen another post with the same.. and now I’m wondering if it’s a wide group thing?

It may be worth getting a new bag of the same type of pellets to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes they go off - eg a bit of damp gets in, etc

The shape of Adult SS pellets changed a few months ago. They are same length, but thinner. They also (to me) appear to look harder., but do break up as easily as previously.

I am unable to judge whether the taste has changed or not as my bunnies are clearly detecting no important difference and eating them fine.

If, after you've done as Shimmer suggests with a new bag, I suggest you try a different pellet (feeding very small amounts to begin with obviously).

From your other post it seems that both bunnies are behaving the same, which to me would indicate that it's a pellet issue rather than a bunny issue.
