My bunny died

MWilo

New Kit
Got a mini lop called Ollie at 8 weeks old. He died on Saturday at only 11 weeks old. He had diarrhoea for one day then I found him the next morning when I went downstairs. I wonder if he had Coccidiosis before he came to me as he was fine for the first 2 weeks then starting seeing a difference in him with no Binkys. Would still flop and loaf so he was definitely happy.

Went to the vet on Friday night said he was little underweight gave some prebiotic paste which he ate then died over night. Feel like they could have done more and hydrated him.

I'm so sorry that you lost Ollie so suddenly and so young.

Rabbits are such fragile creatures, particularly when so young. By the time they are showing signs of illness, it's usually quite advanced. Diarrhoea is very serious in rabbits, so you were absolutely right to get him straight to a vet.

If you are thinking of getting more rabbits, I would get advice from your vet about any potential issues of disease carryover so that it doesn't happen again. Sometimes it is wise to leave a time gap, and have a thorough disinfect before bringing in a new rabbit, particularly if you suspect something like coccidiosis

I would also look at a different source so that you don't risk the same infection being brought back in from the same place where Ollie came from, and be very careful about sticking to exactly the same diet they are used to for a few weeks before you introduce anything different.

RIP Ollie

I am sorry you lost little Ollie. He was very cute. It is good you took him to the vet. As Shimmer said rabbits are fragile, especially when so young. I experienced similar losses with bunnies of that age in the past, so I know how devastating it can be.
There is no way to know if hydration, medication or extra warmth would have helped him. Rabbits are prey animals so they hide their illness, often until it is too late.

Thinking of getting a new rabbit as feel like a void has been left even though he was only with us for 3 weeks.

I've lost my 2 bunnies this year, 7 months apart, both at older ages. I'd love to find 2 rescue bunnies but am now in my 60s and feel I'm a bit too old to be adopting new pets. I was lucky with my 2 as they were very healthy up to their last 10 days, but I know some buns aren't so healthy.

Have you thought about fostering? There are lots of rabbits that are difficult to adopt eg due to age or medical issues, but they would do so much better in a home situation with rescue backup and costs covered.

Would it be better getting a rescue around 6 months old rather than a baby from a breeder. In hindsight feel like it’s a mistake taking them from the mother so young before the gut is stronger and the stress of the move could have contributed to him passing.

I would prefer a six month old. You may be able to adopt a bunny who was already spayed/neutered too.

I would also like to say how sorry I am that this has happened with little Ollie. As others have said, there is really no way of knowing whether anything could have helped.

I would prefer to get a six month old bunny and also preferably one who has been neutered. Or a pair? Bonded bunny pairs are so much fun!

I would also take Shimmer's advice regarding infection risk and would say ask your vet about this.
