My Brer Rabbit ( 27/7/17 - 24/2/26)

Young Bun
My beautiful Brer got his wings to RB yesterday. He was very healthy until 2 weeks ago and sadly I couldn't watch him suffer any longer, although it's broke my heart. Brer & his brother came to me at 6mths of age. They'd been bought for a toddler who'd lost interest. They'd been brought up on weetabix and exercised on AstroTurf and were often found wandering down the pavement on a side road! I'd like to think he had a better life with us. Real grass, real plants, space to exercise, fresh air, warmth, toys, proper care. He never became friends with his brother but enjoyed his presence at a distance. Brer was such a friendly boy to me - even on the morning of his last trip to the vet he gave me a good grooming as I washed his face. He loved to sunbathe and it pains me that he's missed the recent sunny weather. I will never forget him - the pair were my first ever bunnies and I've learned such a lot from them. As I'm now in my 60s, I'm not sure I could have another bunny friend for brother Bugs - who knows! I've scattered some wildflower seeds over Brer's garden grave, he enjoyed eating the same ones last summer! It's still very raw but am concentrating on the brother left.

Lovely photos ❤️ Your garden looks very pretty in the first photo.

Sending lots more hugs. Losing a bunny is hard.

So hard! Brer loved to get in amongst the flowers in the summer, nibbling at them. The feeling of sadness gets worse!

I agree, a lovely tribute to your boy. What a gorgeous bunny, i am so sorry you lost him. Sweet dreams Brer ♥️

Thank you. I'm thinking of the what ifs - it's torture! If I'd agreed to steroids, he might have picked up, but then even steroids have risks of their own. I have to accept that he's gone and is now not in distress.

Thank you. I think I'm in denial that he's gone. Although he was nearly 9, he was still full of energy up to a fortnight ago. His little body felt so bony though. How I wished he could've had a healthy few more years 😥. I'm grateful for the time he had though.

I feel for you. Losing a much loved rabbit friend is tough. I hope its a comfort that you were able to take him from his rotten life & give him 7 years of a proper rabbity life. I hope you & his brother are coping ok

Thank you. Everyone around me has always said the rabbits have led lovely lives - they've always been well cared for. His brother, Bugs, seems OK. They weren't bonded but tolerated each other. He's eating well, getting lots of fusses. He'll also be 9 in the summer so I'm not sure he'd accept another friend. Time will tell. He's not short of human company - we have 5 granddaughters and 1 grandson ranging from 12yrs to 2yrs and they always love to see him.

Thank you. Bugs seems to be doing OK. Eating, grooming himself - still waiting for a binky but he usually does lots when the sun's out and it's non-stop rain here! I do worry that he needs a friend- not necessarily bonded, but maybe there in the background. Perhaps I'm over thinking again.

I'm so sorry to hear about Brer (I love his name 💔). He was a gorgeous bunny. It sounds like you gave him a wonderful second chance at life. I hope Bugs continues to do well.

Thank you. Brer was a gorgeous bunny, quite a lot bigger than his brother from the same litter. He was always the chubby one but I'd noticed for a while that he felt very bony, which I put down to his senior years. I had to correct the vets on various occasions when he was younger - they always used to shout him in as "Briar" and ask how SHE was doing!!
Bugs is OK it seems, not as cuddly as Brer was but I've been managing to get a bit of reciprocal grooming going on. I'll see how he goes day by day.
