Mischief's eyes

I am having trouble cleaning Mischief's eyes properly. I have been using human eye drops for dry, irritated eyes daily and cleaning them with cooled, boiled water however Lillabelle was obviously cleaning them for him.

They are really gunky now and the fur is really spiky where it is drying. Does anyone have any tips for cleaning the fur please? We will take him back to the vets to get his eyes checked again and also his teeth. This would be just until he gets his eyes flushed again. Thank you

Actually we will just clean them a few times a day with boiledwater until he gets his tear ducts flushed again. They cleaned up well this time as I had help from my OH to hold him still. The skin is looking quite sore bless him 😥

according to a vet at my practice (not my regular one) cooled black tea is an old remedy for bathing gunky eyes. This was a while back & I can't remember if it helped Mouse or not. Apparently the tannins help break it down. Lots of vibes

We took Mischief to the vets for his eye check this evening. Our vet said that his entropian of the eye is now causing him discomfort whereas before it only touched his third eyelid. That he has an eye infection which has inflamed his eyes and so causing his eyelids to rub.

She also checked him over and said his heart and lungs are good and he has a slight burr on a tooth that needs to be checked in 3 months time. We said we would prefer to get his dental done early as we do not want him under more stress as he grieves for Lillabelle. We have booked him in for the 11th June when we next get money again. We have also booked him in for his tear ducts to be flushed through at the same time in case it is causing his eye problem.

Our vet has given us a generic antitbiotic eyedrops and we will update her on how this goes. If needs be we will get eye swabs done both generic ones and for snuffles however she realises it is costly for all of this plus he needs eyedrops urgently to start helping his eyes. He also needs a weeks break without these eyedrops in order to get a true reading on the eye swabs.

He has lost 100g on last weigh in however she said he still has a little extra tummy there. As he is a real lover of food we agreed he should be on a slow diet as he needs to keep eating well and it will help him through this sad time. We feel happier knowing we have started treating his eyes and booked his dental as we really can't afford for him to stop eating now and need to be mindful of keeping him healthy 💙

That just brought back memories of my grandma doing that to mine ☺️

Poor Mischief and his eyes, your vet sounds very good though, so hoping the drops keep him comfortable until June. He sounds a real sweetheart licking your arm, give him a little nose rub from me.

I am glad you got a lot of comfort from your vet regarding Lillabelle. Sending vibes that the eye drops along with your removal of any accumulated gunk will keep Mischief comfortable until his procedure in June.

Yes we actually really like our usual vet and always ask to see her now. She was so lovely with Lillabelle and it was a lovely surprise to know she actually syringe fed Lils herself. I expected the vet nurse to do that. Our vet did love Lillabelle and said she had a huge character and her feistiness was a bravado really. She saw her sweet nature too.

Our vet has only really met Chief twice. We stopped taking him when Lils went to the vets as he was such a stress head and absolutely hates the vets. I think he may associate the vets with when he was so poorly with his severe lung infection. Our vet said Mischief was so well behaved and was amused when he stomped his foot at being put back in the carrier.

He is a very soppy bunny and absolutely loves cuddles. I had such a bond with him when he was younger especially when he got very sick. I stepped back when we got Lils so they could bond and they were beautiful together and we saw true bunny love. Now I am able to bond back with him. I believe it helps us both cope with losing Lils 💔

He now asks me for cuddles by sitting by my bed looking up at me. Or it could be for treats! He gets both. Cuddles then a treat. Well a healthy treat as we are going to help him lose this little tummy he still has. I have given him your nose rub thank you. He loves those too 💙

Excuse my long post - I do like to talk about my bunnies 😊

Thank you. Yes your words helped comfort us both. I know grief is a process and has stages but you are right. Everyone questions themselves. We also got comfort from our vet. We still get sad but we are trying not to dwell on her last days and talk about her in the happy times.

I will post about Lils on the rainbow bridge thread however I think my OH should write it or us both together. He is so sad and I just don't think he is quite ready yet. I don't know when we are supposed to write it but he especially needs time to talk about her. I hate seeing him so sad 😥

Mischief's eyes are so much better this morning. They are hardly bloodshot now and less angry looking. He is making comforting clicking noises when I clean them now and before he was jumping and whining. It broke my heart that I hurt him.

The skin around his eyes is much less sore and the gunk has lessened. It takes time to clean them still as the vet said to use boiled water rather than black tea as the tea could affect the eyedrops. I am putting a tiny bit of vaseline on the skin nearest his eyes to protect it at night time from the gunk but in the day I let the skin breathe. I hope I am doing the right thing.

Chief did a couple of binkies today. He is much happier now his eyes are not so sore. He is eating really well. We have had to drop his food down a little as now he gobbles everything in sight 😂 We are so grateful he is doing well and not looking depressed. We give him lots of love and he is loving his cuddle time from both of us x

It is good to hear the drops and gentle cleanings are helping Mischief be more comfortable. Though ask your vet about using vaseline near his eyes.

My OH was attached to our bridge bunny Heidi like your OH was to Lillabelle. It is sad to see them grieving, yet we are blessed our OH's share our love for bunnies and help with their care.

I can check with the vet today although I am pleased to say his skin is looking much better now so I think the eye drops are healing his skin too. He is much brighter and not so grumpy. He was pouncing and growling a couple of days ago but now doing half binkies and running about more and it is good to see considering everything. He is enjoying his food and munching lots of hay too. He is loving his cuddle time. I lie on the bed next to him and he goes to mush when I fuss him. He is so adorable and soppy 😍

Yes I often think of your OH and his lovely bond with Heidi. We are very lucky to have partners who love our bunnies. I am so grateful for him caring for them like I do. I could not have done it on my own with my health issues.

Lillabelle had a happy last few months despite her liver and tummy issues and my OH takes great comfort in that. She was a real character and was always causing trouble and making us laugh. We will share her life with everyone soon 💗

Btw I can't seem to get a red heart anymore. It is always a black heart and I don't know how to change it back. I am having to use other colour hearts instead. Do you know how to do this please? Or should I ask a moderator? Sorry I am useless with technology since not worked for 15 years and don't go on social media much either 🙄

I have the same issue with my red hearts.❤ I never tried to use other ones until now.
It is good to know Mischief is doing well and enjoying his cuddles.

Black hearts are fine but I prefer bright colours really. I have been using pink or purple for Lillabelle and blue for Chief. I'm not sexist but the colours suit them I feel.
Thank you. Chief is actually very spritely. We have been keeping a close eye on him but he seems to accept that Lillabelle has gone. He is eating well and does binkys and zoomies since his eyes are better. We expected him to be depressed and we are surprised how well he is coping.

He has started to jump on the bed and demand fuss again and is loving all the attention. He was very demanding to Lillabelle too. Always pestering her but she sometimes ignored him. He was top bunny but she was no push over bless her. Miss her so much 💗
