Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Liver values

Warren Veteran
Hello to everyone,
I haven't been here for a long time, I've been really busy with a lot of things, my life has changed a lot, I'm sorry for neglecting you all☹️.
I didn't open a topic for a happy topic today. Cookie suddenly stopped eating today and had very low energy. I took him to the vet immediately. He had a blood test done and his liver enzymes(ALT) were found to be very high. The vet told me that it could be the beginning of liver failure, and that Cookie is not a young rabbit anymore (Cookie is 5 years old). In addition, his WBC value was very low, his immunity was very weakened and his body temperature was low. She said that there was no infection in his body, but that he was experiencing a liver-related immune deficiency. But I would like to hear your opinions as I have never fully trusted veterinarians in Turkey. I am adding the test results of Cookie

Sorry to hear about lovely little Cookie, I've no experience of this, but I'm sure someone reading this will be of more help. Good to hear from you though, and I hope you are well and happy, let us know how Cookie gets on 😍

Yea alt is what can detect liver problems, if the liver is damaged alt is released into the blood stream.

Unfortunately I don't know what this looks like for a rabbit, only a human.

If the wbc is low it's unlikely it's an infection, so that makes sense.

Is he eating now? Is he on any medications? How's he in himself now?

After returning from the vet last night, he started eating and getting back to normal, but I'm worried about him, he will be given injections for 3 days. A blood test will be done again in 2 weeks.

The vet gave us Hepacarni medicie. I am adding the image and the content section.

Yes I've been very busy for good reasons, but I'll be posting an update on the forum soon about what's going on in my life 😊

Hello KCG, I'm sorry to hear Cookie is unwell. My only experience with liver enzyme trouble was in my dog, Ebon, who had scary high ALT and ALP for about a year and a half before she passed away this last June. We don't know if these values caused her death in themselves or contributed to it, but we were unsuccessful at treating her with the medications we were given and my suspicion is it may have been due to excessive copper retention from her diet. Reviewing what Cookie eats or drinks if he's exposed to something toxic in your home might be worth looking into.

I really hope it's a one off and he'll be back to normal soon. 5 is about middle aged for a bunny who could possibly live to be 10. I think 2 weeks might be too soon to retest his bloods but I sometimes wonder if Ebon would've had more chance of improvement or treatment if we hadn't been told by our vets to wait 3 months between each test. This could be a different schedule for testing on rabbits too.
I'll be thinking of you both and sending up prayers. ❤️❤️❤️

I was very upset with what I read about Ebon, but thank you for sharing all your knowledge and experience with me. Rest in peace Ebon xx

I hope everything goes well for Cookie, I will follow this and take your advice into consideration, thank you very much 💜💜💜

I have no experience with liver values, yet wanted to send you and Cookie tons of positive vibes for a full recovery. 5 years old is middle aged for a small bunny like Cookie who can live several more years.
It is good he is eating again. How is his output?
I look forward to reading an update about You and Cookie.

Cookie is fine now, he seems completely back to normal, and the medication is working. I hope to see the same results in his blood tests. Thank you for your interest and support💜💜💜
