Litter trays

Hi all! We adopted two bunnies last year, 4 year old sisters, from a rescue. They have 24 hour access to a 3m x 2m aviary set up with some second hand PAH hutches from a neighbour that were hardly used for shelter. However I know these aren't going to last long and I am currently planning to make some adjustments to their set up - getting a roof on the run to give them (and me!) better shelter in the rain as well as the 6ft hutch from rabbit-hutches.co.uk.

Hoping to add some platforms in to give the girls some more space to jump around and open up the floor space some more. They currently have two litter trays in their hutch - one definitely gets way more use than the other. They can be a little messy but do most of their business in the trays with the hay racks. I'm not sure whether getting one bigger litter tray is the way to go or they should still have two? If two is better, I need to think about having one outside of the hutch and wondered if people could share what they use for their outdoor litter tray set ups? I want to try and make everything as easy as possible for daily cleaning as well as using their space better so they still have plenty of enrichment / space to zoom about.

I only use litter trays inside. The trays in the hutches are the biggest I can get that will fit - so that might mean using something not usually described as a 'litter tray', eg potting bench trays. In the runs, they tend to pick an area to toilet in and I just sweep it out as necessary. I find that outside trays are more of a nuisance as they get full of rain, etc. I do use plastic cat shelters in the runs (like the one listed below), with thick newspaper on the bottom and stuffed with hay. They do tend to get used as litter trays. Rabbits do tend to toilet where they eat their hay.

I've also got some of these small wooden shelters with a lift up roof. They just fit a litter tray. The flat gives the rabbits something to jump on.

I would just clean out the tray they prefer more frequently and maybe replace it with a bigger one, if there's room - but I would keep the second tray as well. They may like to sit in at different times, or if one isn't able to use the main one.

Thanks Shimmer. I think I am going to go for a larger tray inside the hutch and then do a wooden shelter or similar outside. Feel like my plans are slowly coming together!

I use under-bed storage boxes for some of my Rabbits, which I bought from Asda.

I also got the under bed storage box from Asda which I use upstairs in their shed and then the base of the PAH cage Pearl arrived in as the downstairs tray.

Another under bed storage box user here. I get the 32 litre ones and line them with newspaper and hay. They usually have one to sit in an one as a toilet area.
