• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lillabelle not eating

Vets didn't prescribe Lillabelle will any pain relief and we are out of Loxicom for dogs. We have Loxicom for cats but don't know the dosage. All we can do is ring the vets tomorrow.

We also have Calpol. I read that rabbits can have this We need to sort out pain relief for Lillabelle. I can try OOH I guess.

Do NOT give Calpol (paracetamol version) unless advised to do so by a Vet

Please check your phone
No of course I wouldn't do that unless I was advised by a vet. I realise it can cause liver damage just like in humans. I was merely thinking I could ring OOH to ask them but then I remembered they won't prescribe over the phone

What I posted was for the benefit of anyone reading the thread as sometimes people don’t realise how dangerous it can be to use human medication for a Rabbit. This part of RU is ‘Public’, people do not have to be forum members to read posts in ‘Health’. So for the benefit of anyone reading this thread I wanted to emphasise how important it is to seek vet advice before giving any human medications to a Rabbit 😀

So she is now on Loxicam for cats this weekend and she is eating again. She has had different herbs and veg over last 12 hours including carrot tops which my OH found at the International shop when he bought their herbs which Chief and Lils both loved.

She is also acting differently NOT staring in to the corner of the cage and not eating all the hard toys today. She obviously has pain. Now we need to convince the vets!

Please could do with more vibes. She is still not back to the feisty Lillabelle we know although she did growl at me earlier whilst I administered her Metoclopramide 😂 Looking better Lils 😊

Thank you Jane for your round the clock advice when needed ❤

Sorry I should have made myself clearer ☹

Thank you Pets mum she was in the lounge earlier. Much more like our Lillabelle ❤️

As pain killers work in 30 mins and has her eating 90% normal feeding compared to around 30% yesterday 😥

We need the vet to prescribe her pain meds and check her mouth again 🙄

It is good to know she is eating better.

Carrot tops were my bridge bunny Raven's favorite and sometimes I had to give away the carrots since we could not eat them as quickly as he ate the green tops. Another of his favorites were dandelion greens. I remember running to many stores searching for his favorites. Today I bought bunch carrots with the greens and the greens are lush and I thought how much Raven would have enjoyed them. It brought back memories to hear Mischief and Lillabelle are enjoying them too!

If she is only eating with pain meds it is likely pain causing her to stop eating. If her underlying issue is not resolved and it progresses the pain meds may not be enough to control her pain and keep her eating.
Sending vibes you will get some positive results when you are able to speak with your insurer and PDSA on Monday.

It is still essential that she is *examined* by a Vet tomorrow morning. It seems almost certain that she needs a dental. The analgesia and prokinetics are only addressing the symptoms not the primary cause.

As previously suggested please make a list of what you need to say to the Vet during the consultation so you are clear about what you expect from him. When stressed and tired it’s easy to forget to emphasise important facts. For L you need to make it 100% clear to the Vet that she continues to display classic symptoms of dental pain. That her GI tract symptoms are secondary to the fact that she is in pain and cannot eat enough to maintain good gut motility.

Also, add to the list your concerns about how this protracted illness might have impacted on her liver and kidney function. Tell the Vet that she is drinking more than normal and that you did note that after her admission last week, when she was on IV fluids for the day, her appetite improved. Only to deteriorate again about 36 hours later. This *might* indicate a compromised renal function.

Finally, ask for a printout of all that is advised during the consultation.

I sincerely hope L will be admitted for a Blood test and dental this morning.

I really hope so. It depends on whether Agria insurance agree to it but their average time to decide on a claim is 5 days!

I am going to ring the vets and if I can't get her booked in tomorrow due to funds I am at least going to explain her need for proper pain meds until I can sort out the insurance. If they don't agree to help we will take her to PDSA. Hopefully they can give us pain meds and may even help us with a dental for her.

Tonight she hid under the bed after her pain meds bless her. This is all so traumatic for her being picked up so much. We have realised she does love a cuddle if we sit on the bed with her. She definitely relaxes with a few strokes and head rubs. It feels that she trusts us more since she has been poorly.

However I will be so happy to have our little Bellatrix back to her usual feisty self. She is now having tea of timothy hay with spring greens, carrot tops, parsley and dill. All favourites of hers. It is so lovely seeing them both eating side by side again. We have not seen much of that lately ❤

Re the insurance- you need to establish if BH do direct claims or if you have to pay BH first, they complete the clinical details on the claim form and you then claim the money back from Agria.

Some Vets will do direct claims, some will want the client to pay them a % of the full bill up front until the claim is settled and some Vets want 100% of the bill paid up front then the client does the insurance claim themselves.

I rang Briar House just now and they want to see Lillabelle this morning. I have to give them our insurance details and they said they will submit the claim to Agria for us. They said if Agria don't pay out then we will be liable. So I guess they are claiming direct then?

I said we need painkiller for her and we are to bring her down at half 11.

She needs to have the cause of her pain addressed so really it seems almost certain she needs a dental. I do hope they will admit her and do it today as this situation has dragged on for so long and whilst pain relief helps it’s just a sticking plaster and not a longterm solution.

A direct claim means you won’t have to pay anything today, but you will have to pay the excess on your policy and if your claim is declined you will have to pay BH in full. The Vet will need to include all of the treatment given so far, as it’s all for the same condition. So that would be the X-ray, the hospital admission fee, consultation fees, medication fees. Then on top of that will be whatever treatment is given today, which should be a full blood profile and a dental under GA, plus whatever medication is prescribed.
