Hi

My best friend has bought a baby bunny when she has 4 cats and 2 dogs and their house is a hording house and she is planning on keeping the rabbit in a small pen ( less than 1m by 1m) and she plans on keeping it as a single rabbit. They have owned 3 rabbits before but all of them lived in the same hutch and died before their first birthday.

I myself have 2 rabbits and I take very good care of them, they have their own room and free roam of the entire house. I've often expressed how expensive and time consuming rabbits are and she still believes this is a good idea.

When she told me I said its not okay and it's abuse but she insists it's just going to live in a hutch for a "month" till they clean the house ( they said this before when they had the other 3 rabbits) she has never taken good care of rabbits before and I dont believe she will this time. She is getting the rabbit from a pet shop that suggested you don't neuter or vaccinated the rabbit ( i screamed when I heard this) she has been given such bad advice and because the advice was from a worker she believe them over me. She's also been on the wrong side of tiktok saying that this is okay rabbit care.
She told me if she cant take care of it she's going to give him to family ( they did this before and they were kept outside in a hutch and died from shock) because she doesn't want it to go to a shelter.
Im really stuck on what to do because not only is it going to be neglected, her cats are aggressive and will attack the rabbit. She's even planning on getting the male rabbit a female friend ( both not neutered)
I dont want to loose my best friend over this but I cant sit back and watch her abuse that rabbit i don't know if i should just take the rabbit, call someone or just cut her off.

Her bedroom is only 2m by 2m I told her even that entire room isn't enough but she insists that the rabbit will be ok because its only goin to be In the hutch at night and when she's at work, I have told her many times even 1 hour in a hutch is abuse, half a day is disgusting. She said I've already bought him so it doesn't matter. She is picking him up tomorrow her bedroom is covered in rubbish and cat **** and vomit, she hasn't even got a hide or the even hutch for it yet, it was a spur of the moment thing because she saw a cute baby bunny. I dont know how they pet shop is allowing this rabbit to be bought by someone who knows absolutely nothing.

She's asking me for advice on how to give the rabbit a good life but everything i say she says nope I saw this on tiktok it's clearly better ( PEOPLE STILL ABUSE RABBITS ON TIKTOK) I told her what kind of litterbox to get the right toys the right amount of space etc but she's doing everything wrong.

I really don't know what to do because I'm sick to my stomach thinking about how that poor rabbit is going to live but she keeps insisting they're going to clean and let it free roam i just dont believe it. Should I just call someone to take the rabbit to a shelter or just take the rabbit from them myself.

I'm sorry you have to go through this, this sounds like a very bad situation. I don't know much about rabbit care enough to give good advice, so I'll leave that to somone else. But what I would say is it's a very bad idea to take the rabbit yourself. If you are in the US, you can be prosecuted for theft. If you are seriously concerned about her house being a hoarding house, you can contact your local ASPCA (or RSPCA) for help and ask for you to remain anonymous. I hope you get help soon.

I don't think there's a lot you can do right now. You have certainly tried.

If you believe there is an issue with how any of the animals are being cared for, you can contact eg the RSPCA and it would be anonymous. You would need to know that eg the rabbit wasn't being cared for - so no water, totally unsuitable / no food, unsanitary conditions, being attacked by other pets. Small and inappropriate housing doesn't really get their attention.

Maybe also look at the pet shop that the rabbit is coming from. In the UK, it must be registered with the local authority if it sells livestock, and meet minimum requirements for temporary housing. You ought to be able to check on this through their website. Report it if it's eg not registered.

I would be tempted to visit the new rabbit with some appropriate gifts - eg. printouts from the RWAF website, the contact details of a vet for vaccinations / neutering, and a large bag of hay. If you can keep an eye on it, you may be able to gently influence how it is cared for - or offer to rehome at an appropriate point (but don't put your pets at risk).
