Hi I'm Kat, 50, from South Wales.

My youngest (almost 18) rescued 2 rabbits in November. A beautiful broken tricolour English Lop doe who will be 2 in April called Bonnie & a, mostly black, Havana Rex buck who is 1 this month called Clyde. We also have Biggie Smalls their (almost) 7 week old kit. Originally he was one of 11 kits but we lost 2 at day 3 & 4, then suddenly lost 7 at 3 weeks + 5 days & another at 5 weeks + 2 days.

Clyde managed to get to Bonnie again, just as we were planning to get them both neutered, & we now think she is expecting around 17th this month!!

The vet thought RVHD was the reason we lost the 7 suddenly & so both parents were vaccinated immediately & the 2 remaining kits were done as soon as they were 5 weeks. However, when we lost Kamikaze at 5+2 we think it was EC because he was drinking a lot but we thought it was due to the vaccines & after he passed I cleaned out their living area & the pads were saturated with urine. The vet got Bonnie straight onto Panacur so hopefully, if she is pregnant, by the time the kits are born we'll have eliminated the risk of EC, Myxomatosis & RVHD.

I would also look at getting Clyde neutered asap so that there isn't another 'accident'. It can take up to 6 weeks after neutering for a male to be no longer fertile. Females can become pregnant immediately after giving birth.

EC spores are spread in urine, so it is important to maintain a good weekly cleaning protocol with something that will kill the spores (eg steam clean, 10% bleach solution, Virkon S and certain other disinfectants). Anything that has potentially been in contact with urine needs to be disposed of (eg bedding) or treated weekly - so bowls, toys, lower walls, floors, etc. Virkon S can be used to wash fabrics in a washing machine eg if you use fleece blankets.

EC is a common environmental parasite that affects rabbits, and tends to be more of an issue when the rabbits are stressed in any way (eg pregnancy, new home, other illness). Treatment will reduce the loading on the animal, but probably won't totally eliminate it, so you may have to keep an eye out for future signs that they need another 28 day course of Panacur. The parasite has a 28 day lifecycle, so initially, you need to treat all rabbits sharing the same space so that you can get a 'clean' start.
