Heatwave

How are all the other UK bunnies doing in this heat?

Piper's being flopping and sleeping, I've been wetting her ears and encouraging her to drink, as well as feeding cold spring greens from the fridge. We couldn't find any chicory (my go to hot day rabbit snack) on our last shop, but we're off to big asda later to get some.

She's now asleep next to the fan

I was wondering this too, it sure is hot. I am bunless these days, but am keeping my 1 Yr old kitty cool, with a fan, and by damping her fur, which is long and thick. Glad your's is coping, clever girl being by the fan. Hopefully it will cool down in a couple of days 🥵

My two live outside and I'm really pleased that we designed their outside accommodation, so that some of it was sunny and some shady. Also outside it is all on concrete and inside the shed on lino. I think the surfaces remain quite cool.

They both seem to find benefit by stretching out full length on their tummies, Froe is on the lino and Tui on the concrete.

For outdoor bunnies, shade cloths or heat reflective tarps can work wonders.

I had just regular tarp on the west facing side of my duck aviary (the rest is shaded with tree cover and the sun only directly hits it from the west in the afternoons) and for multiple summers it was so hot I had to keep going out and soaking the ducks in pans of water and misting with a hose etc.

They were overheating so easily. Heat reflective tarp changed that, now they do fine.

For indoors shades can work well too. Also when our air con was broken we put box fans in the windows. You can either face the fan out the window and it sucks heat and humidity out, or you can do it the other way and it sucks cooler air inside.

Sucking cool air inside especially works well when it's evening or early morning, when the temp might be nice outside but the house is still retaining heat from earlier. May not work so well during the heat of the day.

I too was worried but the rabbits are in a shady area apart from very early in the morning but the piggies are in the full sun.

I had some black weed suppressant cloth that was not doing its job so I have pegged this over the top of the run and this provides shade over the course of the day. I sat under it for a while and it is reasonably effective.

Mine seem to be okay, just been doing regular veggies and herbs, Clementine has a fan she has loved since she was a baby too.

Cats have ac on, I'm at my parents house with no ac though now, Freddie here with us, and we've got a cool coat thing you wet and bandanna for him which seem to work really well actually, so well he was trying to play in 32 degrees yesterday 😂

My fish are with cats so okay, I always worry about water temp increasing too much in hot weather.

I don't actually mind the heat so I've been alright tbh, can't say the same for everyone else though 😂

Ours have areas across the garden, but they're in the north-facing bit of our garden (we're an L-shape). We came back earlier than planned from Essex becasue I wasn't that well, it was too hot (and Mum's old house is impossible to keep cool because the brickwork heats up so much) and I was a bit worried about Barrie in the heat. So we've been here where downstairs hasn't got above 23.5C yet ;P But that's because I'm good at keeping the house cool and a skylight to send all the heat out makes a humungous difference. We've had the bunnies out on the lawn the past few days and they haven't been struggling at all. Dotty's trench has turned into a tunnel that goes down and now has some sort of chamber because she can turn round: she's started coming out face-first! At least she's keeping cool down there XD Even without the lawn, the tiny hutch 'waypoint' (we call it Area 3) is next to the house so it doesn't get sun after 9am.

We stuck a granite slab in the playhouse and that's been holding the cool better than the heat, but they don't tend to use it XD

Aww... Freddie is the cutest dog in the world.
He is rather handsome, going anywhere with him is like you're with a celebrity, everyone wants to say hi and pet him 😂

Just found Percy dead :( he was our last pig. He was eating earlier and okay Idk if it was the heat or what, he was like really ancient, but still, boarding place last year thought he was gunna die then he just didn't...he had parsley a couple hours ago out my hand and seemed himself. I guess at least he didn't suffer long. Idk how ima explain it to Evelyn she still doesn't really understand death, and it's a bit of a difficult subject now, she just thinks you go to hospital and get fixed..🫠

Oh Graciee I am so sorry to read about Percy, I hope Evelyn is not too upset.

Really sorry to hear about Percy. Sounds like it was his heart, which is always the best way for a piggy to go. Very shocking for us though!

Thanks both

Yea it can't have been that long ago, I just buried him and he wasn't even stiff yet. Looked peaceful at least.

That's good then if that's the best way. He was the best pig, not really like a pig in personality, ima miss his wheeks though

Graciee
I am so sorry you lost Percy. It sounds like he was a special piggie.
Losing him quickly must have been a shock, yet sounds like it was better for Percy. Hugs for you and Evelyn.

So sorry to hear that you have lost Percy, sounds like a peaceful passing bless him. Sweet dreams little Piggy x Big hugs Graciee xx

I'm so sorry that you've lost Percy. It's always a shock when it happens like that. Sleep tight little piggie. Lots of hugs for you and Evelyn. Events like this will help Evelyn understand and process death.

Bunnies seem fine...the heat doesn't stop them cuddling. I haven't taken them outside though as it feels too hot. Ivor & Oska are feeling it. I found one curled up asleep on top of the substrate which is a first & they are much less active. Yesterday I was working in the kitchen where the heat felt unreal. Off work today so can mooch round in my cold house (I find it upsettingly cold for 10 months of the year) & garden

Thanks everyone

I've explained it to her, she's in tears now saying he was the best pig and how will we see him again etc. It's sad because we only moved back here Sunday, so she's only just been feeding them all again since then and she really missed him coz he was really funny

So that's gone well... 🫠

Also said pigs are her favourite which isn't great coz I don't want more..😂
