• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

First dental problems at 9yrs old!

So sorry. It sounds like he would not have got through the GA, so it was a good thing that this vet checked him over first. He was well loved and I'm sure will be equally well missed.

Thank you for your kind words. I will miss him so much! He kept me in a routine. He was showing signs of illness for 10 days only and for that I'm thankful. It's heartbreaking just now.

Something is really bothering me in hindsight!
The vet surgery asked me to bring Bugs in for his dental ready for 9am on the Monday. I left him in good faith and waited for the phone call to say he was all done & ready to collect. However, bearing in mind I'd dropped him off for 9, I didn't get the call until 1pm. This was to say he'd not had his dental and masses were found, along with muscle wasting. So it's saddened me that he waited at least 4hrs in a cage, probably frightened, when he could've waited at home until then.

The vet will have done all that day's surgeries in a specific order. Dentals are done last as they are 'dirty' procedures. The mouth is full of bugs that will become aerosols during the procedure, and that is an infection risk for any open surgery (eg spaying). My vet also does all surgical procedures after the morning clinic, so probably starts after 11am. Most pets need starving before a GA, so they like to have them in early. It also means they know exactly what cases they have to do (in case of no-shows), and can get all the equipment ready / sterilised in time.

You really did all you could, including the change of vet for the dental. They were the ones who checked him over and decided that the dental wasn't required. He was well cared for right up to the end. You don't need to beat yourself up over this, so take some time to care for yourself now.

Thank you. It's getting used to being rabbit-less after 8 years that's hard. We've not had a proper holiday in years as I wouldn't leave the rabbits. Now we're able to but I've got out of the holiday habit. I appreciate both boys lived long happy lives. The vet nurses did say he'd had lots of fusses during the morning of his planned procedure which puts my mind at rest a little bit.
