• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye ulcer not healing - update!

Young Bun
Hi all 😊.

Just posting to get your thoughts of my rabbit Hugo. He has an ulcer on his eye which isn’t healing.

Story so far:

He had a cloudy eye. The vet diagnosed dry eye and flushed his tear ducts. He had an eye ointment & Remend for a week but didn‘t resolve the issue.

Vet then confirmed Hugo had ulcer using the dye and he has been on Remend twice a day and antibiotics 4 times a day for 2 weeks. The first week it reduced by 50% but it hasn’t reduced much since. He’s now being referred to a vet in Harold Wood called Martin Lawton. I’ve read rave reviews about him.

Has anyone got any advice or experience of eye ulcers or this vet? This is new territory for me.

Thank you. ☺️

Unfortunately eye ulcers can sometimes prove to be very problematic to treat. Getting a Specialist involved sooner rather than later is always the best option. The primary cause of the ulcer and why it won’t heal needs to be looked into. Apart from pharmacological treatments there are surgical options eg debridement of damaged tissue, corneal grafts, temporarily suturing the eyelids together, grid keratotomy.

some links refer to the treatment in dogs but it’s the same procedure that’s used when treating a Rabbit

There is also the use of autologous platelet rich plasma eye drops

or the insertion of a bandage contact lens.

Thank you so much for this information and your positive vibes for Hugo. His appointment is on the 6th of November. Hopefully we can get the treatment he needs ❤️

Hi All, just an update……….Vet Martin Lawton was incredible. Diagnosed Glaucoma. The ulcer has occurred due to Hugo’s eye lid not properly protecting the eye due to the enlargement of the eye. He’s now on eye drops and revisiting vet next week. Hopefully the pressure will of decreased and we can focus on treating the ulcer and managing the glaucoma. I’m just pleased that I have finally have answers. I’d recommend Martin Lawton to anyone looking for a specialist vet. He is incredibly knowledgeable, straight to the point and his explanation is clear and concise.

I'm so happy for you that you've a specialist on board (he sounds fab), a diagnosis & treatment plan. Lots of well wishes for your bun
