• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does a rabbit's nails tell the health status of the rabbit?

I watch those youtube video about a person's nail status can indicate the health of a human. Does the same thing applies to a rabbit?

As I have been trimming rabbit nails for 28 yr. Today when I trim my bun's nail, the tip of the nail has a sandy color, and when I snap it w/ the nail clipper, it's easier to snap compares to the other rabbits, not as strong as the other bun's nails. I can tell by the sound the nail clipper makes as well as the pressure I use on the nail clipper

the sandy color at the top of the nail is also a wrong color

I don't know the answer but it makes sense that nails would reflect their health status, just like their fur. The way you describe clipping your buns nails (the one with the sandy tips) makes me think of fungal infections in people though I've no idea whether bunnies could get this. Worth exploring further I think

I'll check his nails more often from now on. His diet is very good, drink plenty amt. of water, urine color is normal. Everything else is okay

Interesting question! Without any rabbit knowledge, I'd be inclined to think so based on other animals. Bird nails/beak reflect health as do horse hooves. All are made of keratin, so maybe they're all connected?
