Diggy diggy bun!

For the past week, our charming girl Halloumi has decided that the litter tray is a fun dig box and is constantly sitting in it to eat hay...and then flipping the dig switch and digging the whole lot out all over the floor! She has never done it before and the other two in the fluffle don't do it. But it's very annoying to keep having to sweep it all up and it's also making the house stink of urine because she is constantly agitating it. I also worry she might end up getting urine burn on her feet if she's always rummaging around in it. Any tips on getting her to stop? I have looked at one of those litter trays with sides and a grate on it but I am not sure about them. Thanks!

Will the tray fit inside a big box as a temporary measure to contain the mess? Cut one side out of the box for access and leave the top open so it leaves 3 higher sides.

Some of mine do this at times, but it seems to be in phases.

What do you use under the hay? If the litter is going everywhere, you could try using newspaper - either as a thicker base layer with or without litter and hay on top, or maybe a thin layer on top of the litter to contain it a bit more - as long as they don't try to eat the paper. Paper wads are easy to change daily as you can just lift it all out, replace the paper and put the clean hay back on top. With 3 rabbits you might need more than one litter tray and spot clean daily to keep it sanitary and also minimise the smell.

We have a guinea pig pad under the litter tray with the hay bag next to it. I have just changed the litter and hardly filled it up at all. She is still trying to dig it next to me but it's mostly hitting the side of the tray! We have a higher-sided litter tray (with grate) arriving soon, so I'll try that one too.

We had another thought - we read that it's common in unspayed females. Enya is still too young to be spayed but is probably hormonal. Could Halloumi be reacting to Enya's hormones?
