Digging Box

Hello,

I have a question for those of you who give your bunnies digging boxes with soil or sand.

I think my Ozzie would *love* to have a digging box with soil or sand, as he digs, rips and shreds more than any of my other buns ever had. He has plenty of toys, but favours soft furnishings (not ideal).

Does it need to be a particular type of soil or sand, and how to you clean it off your buns afterwards? He has white fur 😄

Thank you xx

I used to use a mix of play sand & top soil. He might lucky mucky after a good digging session but he should be able to clean himself up without assistance. I hope Ozzie has fun with it ❤️

Play sand for kids is fine, like j&b used, or any soil that doesn't have fertiliser in it. Unless Ozzie has long fur or health issues that keep him from grooming he won't need any help cleaning it off; wild bunnies do lots of digging, after all, and they don't have any humans around to clean them up! 😊 I hope he'll enjoy his digging box

Thank you - I’ll get him some and and fertiliser-free soil 😄 xx

Hey everyone!

I have a 5-month-old female white mini lop rabbit who’s super playful, and I want to make her a digging box. After doing some research, I decided on a mix of chemical-free coco coir + hay + shredded paper.
I think this combo is great because:
  • it’s safe if she accidentally eats some,
  • it’s safe for her lungs and nose (no dust or blockage),
  • it’s safe if it sticks to her genital area (no risk of infection).
Has anyone tried this before and can share their experience? Also, is there a chance she’ll treat it as a second litter box, and if so, any tips on how to prevent that?

Thanks a lot in advance for your advice!

Some rabbits will eat paper or card, so you need to check that yours doesn't as it can cause gut issues. Longer shredded strips can also get tangled up around legs.

I don't think there's much you can do to stop her using the digging box as a litter tray if that's what she decides to do. Just check it regularly and keep it clean.
