Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hello to everyone,
I haven't been active here for a long time but I come with a not so happy situation. Cookie has been in some pain since last week, he is in a hunched position. The vet gave me probiotics and said it was gas. He hasn't been well for a week, he continues to be in a hunched position but his pooping, peeing and eating are fine. The vet examined Cookie today, both manually and with x-rays. The vet said that while he was palpating Cookie, she felt a mass in Cookie's chest. In the X-ray results, there is both gas and strange shadows around the abdomen. She said that these shadow-like spots are exposed to air. She said they were not filled with water, pus or blood. We don't know exactly what it is, but they even suspect a tumor risk as a last possibility. I mean, I'm not sure, but they didn't like that shadow image. I don't fully understand what happened, I can't trust vets in Turkey 100 percent, I'm very confused, has anyone experienced a similar situation or do you know about this situation? But cookie is really good overall. But I wonder if it's worth getting further tests done? If it's something serious, I want to get it done as an early precaution, but if not, I don't want Cookie to suffer in vain.

Did the vet suggest any further diagnostics as she doesn't know what the 'shadows' are? Maybe a full range of blood tests would be helpful? Did she suggest you go back if there's no improvement?

I would also request some pain relief for Cookie and I would make sure that his diet is as simple as possible, ie just hay, a small amount of veg/herbs and a few pellets (if he has pellets).

I am sorry Cookie is having discomfort. Did vets prescribe pain meds? Gas can be painful, though it often with gi stasis. Can you feel the mass when you hold him?
Some foods/treats can cause gas too.
Sending vibes for Cookie and you.

Sorry to hear that Cookie is unwell. Where in the abdomen is the ‘mass’? I am confused as to what the Vet means by the ‘spots’ being exposed to air.

Have you noticed any change in Cookie’s respiratory rate and/or effort?Do you ever notice his eyes bulging?! Especially when lowering his head to eat or drink.

A CT scan would give more detailed information and a full blood profile would be useful too.Especially looking for any signs of anaemia and/ or raised blood calcium.

As Omi and BM have suggested, Cookie probably needs pain relief as a ‘hunched up’ Rabbit usually means a Rabbit in pain.

Did the Vet give you a copy of the X-ray images ?

She also suggested a different imaging technique for shadows, such as tracing the intestines and stomach with medicine paint. But she suggested monthly x-ray follow-up for 1 year. As a last preference, she suggested cutting open his belly and looking at it, but I'm not going to go for it. She didn't give him any painkillers, she gave him something by mouth for 3 days, we go to the vet every day. She said this thing will relax him, he normally eats a lot of hay but now he eats even more. Thank you very much for your interest and support dear 🩷🩷🩷

She didn't give him a painkiller, I'll wait a little longer but if that doesn't work I'll ask for a painkiller too but I don't understand this shadow thing and it scares me, thank you for your support 😔🩷

She said the mass was under his ribcage and there were shadows on the sides of his abdomen. They couldn't understand what was going on. But apart from that she also said he had gas. But other than the gas, these masses and shadows scare me.

His eyes don't bulging, he eats and drinks very well. But this morning for the first time I noticed some breathing problems but it has improved now.

Today, X-rays and ultrasounds were taken to check his abdomen, but I am not sure if the vet's methods were sufficient.

Tomorrow I will ask her for the x-ray images and upload them here honey, thank you very much for your help 😔🩷

We went to the vet today, they are giving Cookie Metramidozole medicine orally for 3 days. Tomorrow is the last day, after this medicine he started eating hay 3-4 times more than normal, normally he was eating hay well, he had no appetite problem but now he is eating even more.
The vet said the mass in Cookie's ribcage has gotten smaller, probably something like gas or poop impaction.
I got an x-ray of cookie from her today, she thinks the shadowy tissue on both sides of his abdomen is pathological, but I don't know we are thinking of monitoring him for a long time, he will have x-rays taken every month. In the images, there are shadowy dots on both sides of his belly, the vet thinks these are pathological, have you ever seen them before? 😔

Has he had a recent full blood profile? I would want this done, especially checking for any signs of infection, liver function and anaemia. Did the Vet mention chronic peritonitis ?

Sorry I've been working so hard that I've only just now managed to reply to your message, I can't even breathe. She didn't do any of this for Cookie, and she didn't give him any painkillers. They suspected something similar in Cookie's stomach and injected her belly to see if there was any fluid, but they couldn't find anything, they suspected that there might be a stuck poop and gave him oral medication for 3 days, Cookie's appetite and poops are fine. But they still don't know what that image on both sides of his abdomen is, they injected it and found no inflammation. They said there was something pathological that could only get air in there. 😔

If the situation progresses, I will do what you say and I am even thinking of taking Cookie to Ankara (the capital) to the vet. Thank you honey really I love you so much 🩷🩷🩷🩷

If getting Cookie to a more Rabbit savvy Vet is an option I would do that. Is he still hunched up a lot of the time?

EDIT - you could book an online consultation here

Sending them the X-ray images and they can also request Cookie’s clinical records from your current Vet. Whilst what can be achieved from an online consultation will be limited, it’d be a start.

Haha Jane you are awesome 😅
Our former veterinarian in Istanbul in the link. But now I live very far from Istanbul, 15 hours by car. I think it would be wiser to go to Ankara, there is another vet there. They are monitoring his condition for now, but if it continues like this, I will definitely meet with them. Maybe I'll meet online with the old vet in Istanbul, I hadn't thought of that option, thank you so much 💜
Cookie was fine for a few days, but something happened yesterday.
Cookie attacked and ate strawberries yesterday 🤦 He had already eaten one before I saw him. Today his stomach hurts and his poops got smaller. There is a poop exit but he does not look comfortable at all. The vet told me I could give him a few drops of olive oil but I don't think it's safe to use. That's why I won't apply it, I'll give him wet vegetables, I swear I never trust vets in Türkiye, I'll have to become a vet myself 😩

Oh blimey, I didn’t know you lived so far away from Istanbul now!

Cookie might have tummy pain due to eating too many Strawberries yesterday. Definitely don’t give him Olive Oil. If he’s eating veg then serving them wet is a great idea to keep his hydration up. Also, encourage him to eat hay. Fibre is what will help his GI tract the most. Without stressing him out try to get him to hop about every couple of hours. IT will help his gut motility and to disperse any build up of gas.

Can you obtain anything similar to Fibreplex in Turkey ?

I am on the fence as to the benefits of giving it but it won’t do any harm. I just did a quick online search, but couldnt find anything.

I do not give fruit to my rabbits because I had a couple bunnies get gassy tummies in the past. I know others on RU do and never have issues.
I am glad you decided not to give oil.
Sending you and Cookie lots of positive vibes.
