Just a thought, how about gift vouchers for Asda, Tesco etc? Can be used to buy fresh food, kitchen roll, towels......... almost anything and very easy to pop in the post.

lovely result so far, people are very kind.
just to add if anyone is thinking of other items..exam gloves..latex ones can be bought in small amounts in most supermarkets..are used in large quantities by most rescues, so another item to consider

yesterday we received a parcel which turned out to be a box of latex exam gloves. Now not sure who sent them as no name but wondered if it was anyone who saw my comment on this thread :?
