• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Hello, my pet bunny has began making odd noises. It seems to be while using her litter box. she is eating and drinking fine and no chages in her behaviour. Please advise what this could be and what I should do. Could this be a simple UTI? Or should I be more worried? Like I mentioned she seems to be okay overall with no other signs of discomfort. She was spayed in mid January, and recovered really well. Please help.
Please see below.

She needs IMMEDIATE Veterinary attention. She’s straining to urinate or defacate which could lead to bladder rupture.and other serious problems. The squealing is due to severe pain.

The best thing you can do for her is take her to a Rabbit savvy Vet now.

Hello, following your advise my bunny has now been to the vets. I researched urinary issues and mentioned possible calcium build up or bladder/ kidney stones to the vet. They advised although uncommon it may just be simple cystitis as she is passing little bits of urine. This morning I noticed a urine stain on a fresh puppy pad (I have placed those down to monitor the bowel and urine motions - bowel mothions all ok). I noticed a white stain in the middle. From my research I gathered this may be "sludge". I mentioned this to the veterinary practitioner and have been sent home with Loxicom for pain relief. I was just advised to monitor the urine motions. If no improvement a urine sample will be collected. Does this sound right? Although having 2 bunnies I have never had an issue like this as we monitor the diets closely. I'd just hate for her to be in pain.

Did the Vet not suggest an abdominal X-ray to check for bladder sludge/ stones Did the Vet not offer hospitalisation for fluid therapy and monitoring? I suggest that you take a look at this info ‘

Thank you, that's very helpful. Since my bunny isn't showing any other signs of discomfort the vet did not suggest any further treatment unless the symptom show in the video does not subside. After examination the vet stated the bladder does not feel full and my bunny is getting plenty of fluids so based on this the vet advised just pain relief. I kept mentioning sludge or bladder/ kidney stones but the vet was very quick to give diagnosis of possible cystitis. I will keep administering fluids at home and monitor the urine motions. I asked the vet to show me how to perform a bladder exam and what to feel for. I will keep doing this and if nothing changes within a few days I will take my bunny to the vet again. Like I mentioned she isn't showing any other signs of discomfort. She's almost a year old and is being her playful self, eating and drinking as usual l. Let's hope everything resolves it self.

I am glad she got seen by a vet and she is getting pain meds and fluids. Did vet give any antibiotics for cystitis?
I advise against examining her bladder on your own. The tissues are delicate, especially if the bladder is full or distended.
Sending vibes.

Unfortunately, no only Loxicom (10kg dose twice a day). The vet advised this should provide some comfort while passing urine. Thank you for all the help.

You could also try supplementing the treatment with diluted cranberry juice (50/50 mix with water). But if she doesn't improve in a couple of days definitely get a second opinion. Fingers crossed for her!
