Bunny in need of a home rather urgently! UPDATE - SORTED

Wise Old Thumper
Good morning, is anyone in a position to help rehome a rather lovely female bunny that my elderly neighbours have kindly taken in after several years of confinement and neglect? They feel unable to do this long term as are both in their 80's. It's a little bit complicated but bunny has come from another mutual neighbour of ours who through lack of knowledge and naiveity has kept rabbits in confinement and this is the last survivor of an accidental litter. They have either been taken by foxes or died of goodness knows what in completely inappropriate accomodation. They are a lovely kind family but there is a language and cultural barrier and my elderly neighbours have done everything they can to support and try and change how the bunnies were cared for. They weren't even given water until she advised them to. The last surviving rabbit came to elderly neighbour whilst the family went home for Christmas abroad and she is not willing to return bunny as can't bear her being left out in solitary confinement in the cold and risk of dying like the others. She knows the family very well and they have agreed and have talked about rehoming this bunny anyway. I have avoided getting involved to this point but my elderly neighbours have now come to me for advice.
Bunny was brought over for Xmas in a 1.5 foot square chicken wire box on cardboard, that's it. She has never been out of her confinement either in this or a tiny hutch she originally shared with 7 others. She is unspayed, unvaccinated but in remarkably good condition. I went to see her yesterday and checked her over. She's terrified of being picked up and grunts and cowers in fear but once you have her she is incredibly easy to handle (or terrified). We clipped her nails and I checked her all over. Apart from a small moveable lump above her left fore-leg she is in really good shape, clean and producing lovely golden droppings thanks again to my neighbours for getting them to feed her hay. Until then they were only ever fed carrots.
She is an uppy-eared medium sized BEW, good natured but has lived a life of confinement and will need patience and gentle handling. She's only around 3-4 yrs old.
My elderly neighbours have limited space, funds and a huge rescue cat (who is fortunately not interested) and today we will set up some sort of larger enclosure in the conservatory but they just can't do this in the long term. The family she came from are happy to let her go and will, if we ask them, pay for vaccinations/donation to a rescue. I'm reluctant to get her spayed as after care is too much to ask of my neighbours.
Can anyone help? She is such a sweet little bunny. I can drive her within reason.
Happy New Year to you all!
Best wishes,
Vicky x

Hello stranger ! Its Jane here AKA ‘Jack’s-Jane’.

I wish I were able to help but sadly due to my poor health I can’t adopt any more pets. Would you believe I only have one Rabbit now ☹️

Have you tried contacting local Rescues ? They probably won’t be able to take her straight away but they might put her on a waiting list.

There is also Bunny Angels on FB

Hope all is well for you and your family and best wishes for 2026 x

Hi Jane, how lovely to hear from you and thank you for your reply. I'm so sorry to hear you only have one bun left now, so much time has passed. Their lives are so fleeting compared to ours
So I do have a little update, I rescued the bunny with permission from the owners and to the relief of my elderly neighbour who had taken bunny on in the interim. She is now living in a temporary set up at my parent's house down the road and is safe and cared for, I go daily to help look after her but my dad is quite capable too, even if old! In the meantime only one of the 8 local rescues I contacted were able to help even with placing her on a waiting list (I can only imagine how dire the rescue situation currently is) and she has been offered a place at this fantastic rescue which we are so grateful for. She will stay with us until she has been vaccinated and her lump checked over next week and then move into rescue for rehoming hopefully. The only problem now is that my Dad has become rather fond of her and wants her to stay! !
I will update my post above to say she has been sorted locally.

Thank you again for letting me post and hopefully a happy ending for this little girl too. 🤞 All the best to you all for 2026 x[/url]
