Bonding Rabbits

New Kit
Hi there,

We have found 2 rabbits that we want to buy, one is a boy (8 weeks old) and one is a girl (6 weeks old). They have the same Dad but different mums.

We would get them both neutered/spayed at the appropriate times, however I am concerned about bringing them home together as we only have one carrier. They currently live separated and I am unsure how to bond them as I dont want them to fight, but realistically keeping them apart isnt going to be that easy.

Can anyone advise me on whether this is a good pairing or should I wait for a boy and girl from the same litter, or should we just get one of them?

Thanks

The safest and easiest way to go about this is to get a boy first then get him neutered when he is old enough. Your Vet will advise on that. He could be fertile for up to 6 weeks post neuter then you could introduce him to a female who could be spayed when she is around 6 months. If you got them both now, and 6 weeks is too early to leave Mum, you would have to keep them separated until the boy is neutered, as above.

Thank you for the reply.

do you think it would be worth getting just one rabbit instead of two? I’ve read they can get lonely but I had a rabbit as a child and we only had one rabbit and he was absolutely fine.

Rabbits should always be kept with their own species. Have you considered getting a pair from a rescue? There are so many benefits to rescuing & it is so much easier to get on & enjoy sharing your life with rabbits without having to worry about spaying/ neutering, vaccinations & bonding them ❤️ Reputable rescues only though, those that already have the things I listed above.
