Barrie and Chibbs update U/D post 39

Quick Chibbs update: she's getting slower and wonkier <3 She's still happy, but we keep finding her with a wonky back end, like one of her legs has half failed. She can still make it through the 5m tube though, just a bit slower. And she can't really hop when she's like that, but she gets around OK. For example, she was like it yesterday about 5pm, but had seemed OK at 4:30pm (not that she moved much to get food as I dumped it right in front of her so she could find it). This morning, pre-metacam, hopping as normal. I wonder if she gets a leg trapped somewhere and hurts it, but I can't work out why or where. I'm going to try picking her up today to see if I can find out what the problem is: she will not be happy about that ;P

Aw, wonky Chibbs ❤️ Sophie had that, with one of her back legs, because of her arthritis, so it might be that for Chibbs as well? In the beginning, it was only part of the time rather than the entire day.

Yes, we think so too, Reader! Like, she gets tired and stuff stops working: I can certainly account for this (menopause is a *****), as I'm sure you can!

I did manage to pick he up. She tried to scarper just like normal, which was heartening. She grunted at me in protest as I held her front paws tight (or she'll climb over my shoulder and make a jump for it, silly girl), but I didn't take long poking her legs about: she certainly didn't flinch in pain like she does when we do something painful to her. Put her down, she didn't scrabble for the ground but let me gently put her front end down as well, and then thumped loudly at me 🤣 I think she's mostly OK, we'll see how upping her metacam goes :)

Aw, yeah, I can relate to that, definitely.

I'm glad it didn't seem like her legs were particularly painful when you checked them. Sophie didn't really show any of her usual signs of pain with her leg, though bunnies do of course try to hide these things, so I can't be sure, but I think it might've been more weakness and/or stiffness than that it was sore for her, though she did of course get her Metacam and laser therapy. I hope upping Chibb's Metacam can help. It sounds like she certainly still has her attitude

As our pets get older It can be hard to tell if it is age related or a minor injury, though it sounds like Chubb’s is doing well still.
Sending vibes the increase in Metacam will help her to be less wonky.

Oh, Chibbs it's not great to be getting old is it. I hope that the increased Metacam will help to keep you feeling comfortable and happy.

Chibbs' left leg doesn't really work anymore, poor kid. She's still just getting on with life, but Matt has had to make provisions to get her places she needs to go. We've removed the steps to the windowsill in the playhouse, she has no need to go up there, but the run layout means she needs to go up to get out. She's walking rather than hopping, but she manages. If she's overexcited, she forgets she can't hop (or see) and falls over, and she fell off the steps into the house a few weeks ago and just waited on the floor until he picked her up :S She gets disorientated too, because she can't see, and sometimes goes down the wrong tube, ending up on the lawn at pellet time rather than the house. Matt has started calling himself 'rabbit taxi service' XD

This morning, Matt was out with her medication. He gives Barrie some apple leaves on the windowsill to distract him, and Barrie was slow today so Matt was delayed. Chibbs actually thumped at Matt XD Not bad for a rabbit with only one working back leg, eh? He says she's definitely a drug addict now XD

aww poor Chibbs, reminds me of Boobly. It is good to hear she embraces life regardless, gets over excited & Matt to make getting about easier.
Nose rubs for her & Barrie

It sounds like Chibbs is still enjoying herself and is able to compensate when mobility issues present themselves. I would be proud of her :D Matt also seems to know instinctively how to help them both, which is great.

Hoping that things remain in a positive light for both of them.

Aw, I'm sorry about her leg. It sounds like Chibbs doesn't really care though, living her life as much as she can ❤️.

Aw, she's certainly hasn't lost her attitude, has she, thumping at Matt to hurry up  And she has her own rabbit taxi service. It sounds like she's coping well, with Matt's help.

It is lovely that Chibbs has her bunny taxi service and she is enjoying life in spite of her disabilities with her feisty attitude. Sending her and Barrie lots of vibes.

Thankyou everyone :)

Sometimes Matt comes up to bed and says 'bunny taxi service was busy this evening!' which means he's had to do both of them XD Recently they've been in the house long before he's gone out with their pellets which is much nicer for all involved :D

Bunnies had their MOT today (to use J&B's term ;P). Doing really well, even Chibbs with her bust leg. I got the vet who's more rabbit-specialist than the others too, which was good: he's been ill himself with cancer. The bunnies were absolute nightmares to keep on the table XD They've both put some weight on, a healthy amount for winter, but we're going to have to move them indoors: Chibbs' bust leg is getting really matty in the wet and she's losing fur. She is NOT going to be thrilled about this, but needs must. She'll enjoy being all on one level though. Means I won't have to worry about her getting chilly over winter once it actually bothers to get cold as well :) Chibbs enjoyed being a complete nightmare on the floor as well, tootling around getting in everyone's way, while Barrie just slipped everywhere and panic-sat in a corner XD Chibbs was basically showing off how her leg doesn't stop her being as normal as possible <3

So, we get the fun job of moving them inside. Sigh. Could be worse: yesterday I said to Matt 'I'm not sure I'm well enough to look after Chibbs in this state' and he just said 'well let's move them inside if we need to and see how it goes.' She;s got really good quality of life in herself, but i worry I;m not currently well enough to keep her environment etc. good enough for her to maintain that. The loss of fur is a good indicator she needs assistance, so we're going to try keeping her here as best we can, just indoors. Does mean we can replace the lawn run finally as well: we've been reluctant to while she's out there because she knows its shape etc., and it seems unfair to change it while she's blind and less mobile!

Glad they both came through their mot's OK. Will they have their own room indoors, or be free ranging ? I loved having indoor buns, made things so much easier for me, being up in Scotland, especially during winter. Good luck with the move anyway, I'm sure buns will adapt, and hopefully be better for you too 😊
