Balloon Grunting

Cinnamon's always been a grunter, especially when she's mad (nail clipping time is soooo much fun!). Chika's quite though (she prefers nibbling as her means of communication). But the other day, when I went to give the girls their salad, someone made a series of little grunts. The closest thing I can compare it to is if you rubbed a finger against a balloon in another room (my other thought was that sounded like an squirrel under a pile of pillows, but I don't know if that makes any sense 😅). I'm not sure if it was Cinny or Chika, since they were so close to each other, but what does it mean? I give their salad in the morning, and they always come running to eat it, so I'm guessing they're happy, I just want to make sure.

I would think it's probably Cinnamon who has made the noise if she is usually the vocal one. I wouldn't think it was an unhappy sound, but what it might be is an indication that they are becoming close to puberty and Cinnamon might be giving the sound as a warning to Chika, especially as it occured when food was produced.

I would listen out for the same noise again and make a note of when it happened. If they are becoming hormonal, then you will need to watch for any aggression between them.

It might, of course, be nothing to due with puberty, but it's worth giving it some attention.

Ah thank you, it is about that time, isn't it? I haven't heard them make any sounds like that since, but I'll keep an ear out.
