• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Azithromycin- Information and Your Experiences Requested

Hello, if anyone can give me any information /experiences of the above antibiotic which I am going to try for my rabbit Holly next week to help her with the snuffles and an ear infection which she has had for 3 months, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks

Jayne

I've used it a lot, and find it to be one of the best antibiotics for infections with lots of puss. Apparently it can cause digestive upsets, but I haven't had a problem with this (so far). I've had rabbits on oral zithromax for long periods of time without ill-effects.

One piece of advice I would give is to tell your vet/pharmacist not to make up the solution in advance because it doesn't store well. All you need to do when you're ready to use the bottle is to mix 9mls of water with the powder and give it a good shake.

Let me know if you need any info on dosage, etc.

It was one of many we tried for Parsley's inner ear infection (we also tried depocillin and rifampicn and a couple of others) - it didnt work but other than a tummy ache at first it didnt do any harm . . .

inner ear infections are funny things - Parsley's cultures as not being responsive to baytril - but Baytril is the only thing that holds it at bay . .

Yes - had excellent results with Zithromax for pnuemonia. Agree with Abbymarysmokey though - don't make it all up at once.
According to my vet (who uses Zithromax so much he jokes he should have shares in the company ), it has a cumulative effect on the body so he tends to give it every day for 5 days and then every other day for 10 days.

It works beautifully for snuffles and I have heard of its being used for ear infections although I've not done that, although as nothing else works maybe I should. On the whole our vets have tried to limit our use of it so that the rabbits won't build up immunity, we only use it once everything else has stopped working. I have several rabbits who seem to have stopped responding to engemycin so that will be the next step. ( All for snuffles). |Two of them are lops and so have ear infections as well. (They ALL get them one way or another, in or out) So I'll see if they improve at the same time.

I used it for my rabbit Tippex's pasteurella ear infection, which cleared up nicely, although she was left with a head tilt. She didn't seem to get any side-effects from it, although she was slightly off her food for the first 24 hours or so- not sure whether that was related. She hated the taste, but many rabbits love it apparently.
It may be a good idea to give a probiotic such as fibreplex alongside it to help keep her guts working well xx
