• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

7 week old baby bunnies

New Kit
Hi. My lionhead had babies 7 weeks ago. Were all doing fine eating, drinking, running around. Since Thursday 4 have just randomly stopped eating and died. There has been no change in home, food etc. They are just going down hill 1 by one and passing away very quickly. 1 of them I took to the out of hours vets and they put him on a drip but within 2 hours he was gone. Just find it so random it's happening to them all. Anyone had this before at this age and know of a reason why?

I'm so sorry you've been losing the baby bunnies. That's so very sad. What did the out of hours vet think was wrong with the bunny you took there? Were the other bunnies examined by a vet, and any bunnies that are still alive? If not, I'd take any remaining babies to the vet immediately to figure out what's going on. The vet is really the only person who can tell you why they're all getting ill. Even if anyone here has experienced the same, it might not be for the same reason, as there are many posibilities.

Hi. The vet didn't seem to know if I'm being honest. Just said his heart rate was low and low blood sugars when we got him to the vet and just said it could be congenital 😢

At 7 weeks, they are going through a lot of digestive changes. Were they still with mum? Is she OK?. Is she vaccinated? It could be viral, in which case any other rabbits you have are at risk and should be vaccinated immediately (which isn't a bad idea anyway), but it will take a couple of weeks to take effect.

If they were still with mum, she could have mastitis so the babies could have been exposed to the infection.
Also, at seven weeks their digestion is still developing the good bacteria they require in their cecum, so they are very susceptible to gi issues.
A virus is also a possibility.
In addition to having a vet check for the babies, I would recommend a vet check for your adult bunnies.
Sending positive vibes for your remaining bunnies.
