We got Rocket from ARC in 2005. He was 3.5 years old and had been given up by a family with kids because he was "aggressive". He was lovely and he bonded with China after a three-day date with her at the centre. Since then, he moved to Madrid and then the USA with us and loved both places.
Other than a few minor problems with an eye infection (successfully treated) he was in perfect health up until two days ago. He became a little lethargic and lost a bit of appetite, although he wasn't in any pain and still was pretty perky. Yesterday we took him to the vets to be safe, and they prescribed painkillers and a gut stimulant. They said he was colder than he should be, and that he seemed to be "slowing down". No cause could be determined, but GI stasis, tooth problems and any other physical abnormality (short of doing x-rays and CT scans) were all ruled out. We took him home and began the medication and syringe-feeding.
Today, despite treatment, he was very lethargic and had begun to grind his teeth a lot. He was floppy when we picked him up and seemed to have trouble even standing. We knew it was his time to go. We took him to the vets and had him put to sleep. China went with him for comfort and was able to see him afterwards so she had closure.
RIP, Rocket-man, you will be missed.
