  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New to Forum - rabbit has balance problems

BinaryBob7

New Kit
My bunny Faith stands to scratch and then falls over on her side. She seems to have lost her sense of balance. I don't know what to do or where to look in this site for answers. I will continue to learn how to navigate this site. Any suggestions?:(

You should take your rabbit to a vet as soon as you can - rabbits can deteriorate fast, and the sooner you get things looked into the better.

Is your rabbit eating, drinking and pooing ok?

P.s. best to call now, so you don't have to make a trip to the emergency vet - they can cost a lot more.

Hi there and welcome :)

There can be many reasons for what you've described, ear issues, neurological as well as the parasite E.C.

There's some info in these links which might help a bit, but it's no substitute for a good vet doing a full and thorough assessment.

I'm sorry to give you a list of possibilities, but that's what it is at the moment - a bit of an unknown quantity and I wanted to try and give you a fuller picture of what you may be dealing with.

Do keep posting and if you want to you can upload a photo of Faith (I love that name):

Hi BinaryBob7

Im sorry {{{Faith}}} is not doing so well. I echo the others in suggesting prompt vet care. The sooner this is treated, the better the outcome usually. The most common cause for loss of balance like this is inner ear infection, though there can be other causes. It can progress to a condition known as head-tilt http://sawneeanimalclinic.com/downloads/head_tilt_in_rabbits.pdf

Here are some vets in Fort Collins known to be "rabbit savvy" - in case you do not know of any as yet.

I wonder if admin could move this to Rabbit Chat? Newbies might not realise they need to be signed in to see this part of the forum, but I don't want the OP to miss the advice...

I've moved it to health as it's a health related issue. Hopefully other people may be able to offer advice and the OP can view the health section without logging in. :thumb:

Thanks! I'm hoping bun is ok, as we've not heard for a couple of days!
