Beebies back leg problem has happened again - sad news

bunnies

Alpha Buck
Beebie has had problems with her back legs since february she has had x rays which showed no problems and has a course of metacam injections which helped her.

Well yesterday I thougth she wasn`t moving so well and today she is dragging her back legs again, she can`t wash her face with both paws and has to use one to steady herself, which she didn`t have to last time and she is dirty again around her back end with wet and dry urine.

Were off to the vets tomorrow and i`m feeling that i may have to make that choice of to carry on or PTS  I hate seeing her like this and she isn`t eating that well and I think she has lost a bit off weight.

But what a terrible choice to have to think about, I`m a bit in torn as I want to do the best for her but don`t want her to suffer, `just one more treatment` is what i think but is that really fair to her!!!!!!!

Also she has a companion and what about him?? OMG what to do?????????????

.............................................

Hiya. How old is Beebie? Did your Vet rule out EC as a cause of her hind leg weakness? If not was she treated with a course of Panacur?
As the Metacam helped before did your Vet suggest keeping her on it longterm? Also, as she has lost weight has she had a blood profile done to check her kidney function in particular?
Sorry to bombard you with so many questions
I would ask your Vet about a blood test. Not only for Kidney Function but also for EC.
I would also ask about a course of Panacur and restarting daily Metacam.
I am sorry that Beebie is poorly again.

She is 3 yrs old and yes she did have a course of panacur last time, the vet wasn`t to happy about long term use of metacam because of internal damage, but as i said to her before that `i`d rather have a happy pain free Beebie than one PTS` and she saw my point.

So i`ll ask tomorrow about long term use, but last time it was given in injection form which i`m happy to do, but what happens when i`m on holiday which is at the beginning of june!!!!

I will also ask for a blood test to.

cheers all, i`ve just read my post and don`t i sound heartless :( , big glass of wine i think, but have just got my horse well as he had uveitis, my nan`s very ill so i think its all getting to me a bit. But have booked my holiday today so something to look forward to :D

aawww good luck at the vets.. i hope there is a positive outcome and Beebie is able to move around again soon

I saw a different vet today, and she did a test on her back feet and the outcome is that her near side rear leg their is no feeling in it and its paralysied SP??, she has been given a metacam injection and i`m to give 1 for the next week.

She`s eating and seems happy, so fingers crossed for her, the vet did say that she can be on metacam long term to help.

I have posted about should it be given injection or oral, the vet said that is has to be injection as given oral it will lay in her stomach and cause ulcuers, if given by injection its in to her blood stream!!!!

So sorry to hear that Beebie's having trouble with her back legs again :( . It sounds as though she has a similar problem to my rabbit Hope. In my case the vet thinks her hindleg weakness is caused by arthritis in one of her knee joints. He said the leg is partially paralysed, and she's finding it difficult to walk and wash herself.

He put her on one drop of Metacam a day (she happily eats it on half a grape) but that didn't seem to make much difference so she's up to two drops now. She seems fine in herself, eating okay and looking really bright and healthy. But we're going back to the vet's tonight because she's developed sores on her feet from walking funny .

I'm sorry, I don't really have any advice and I don't mean to hijack your thread. I just wanted to let you know that I know just how hard it is to have to decide what's best for your bun. I don't feel it's my place to decide when she's had enough and it's time to have her PTS. I posted about this a while ago, and someone said to me that I would know if it was time and that if I have doubts then it's best not to do it.

Hope has a friend too - Manny. He lost his old companion Miffy in January and it took him ages to get over it. I don't want him to loose another friend.

How's Beebie doing today? She's quite young, and recovered from this before, so I really hope she does again!

Well shes doing well, her movement isn`t as good as before but much better than the other day.

Shes on o.12ml of metacam 1 daily by injection and then i go back on saturday and we will see, i`m happy with her like this as she`s eating, drinking & grooming Bracken so she must feel ok!!

So we will keep her on the metacam and see how it go`s??? but if we start to need to much daily then I will have to rethink things :(

Its such a shame as she`s only 3yrs old and to have this happen is so sad, but i`ll do the very best for her.

Anna,

How did it go at the vets with your rabbit?

Beebie not to good tonight and she is wet with urine on her back legs again :( so i have wiped them with baby wipes but she seems really good in herself which is why I find it all hard to think what to do for the best.

now I`m worried about flys and her wet legs, also i`m going on holiday 1st june for 2 weeks and my mum and friend look after the rabbits, I can`t ask them to take this on ...............

OMG why worry about things that are ages away :? :?

If you need a bunny sitter for the disabled Beebie and her friend when you go on holiday just PM me!!
Oxfordshire is not that far away :D :D

It went surprisingly well :D!
The vet said I was doing a great job cleaning her sore feet and dressing them and just to keep on doing what I'm doing. He said the problem won't go away, but the skin should harden up in time. She's so sweet when we have to hold her to bandage her feet - as though she knows it's for a good cause!

Sorry to hear that Beebie's not doing too well today. Hope was getting wet legs a while back and, after washing and drying, I dusted the area with cornflour - it really helps soak up any moisture before it reaches the skin. How frustrating that you don't know what's causing her problems - do you think that massaging her back and back legs could help?

I was going to offer to look after Beebie in June for you as I'm in Gloucestershire - but Jane has much more experience :D!

Beebie is doing Ok, not sure about me though   Even with the metacam she`s not moving well and her back leg gets covered in urine and is really red.

I`m washing her leg using sudocream but within a short time its wet again, i`m so worried about flies getting on it.

She`s eating and drinking and she does move around but her leg is just dragging behind her.

Were going to the vets early next week to discuss options with her, am keeping everything crossed

Click on Pet Photo Gallery. There are many pets that uses the above and lives a full life.

There is a thread here w/ a bunny using the above, and the owner was saying how happy her rabbit is w/ the wheel chair.

EDIT: Found it

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=6807&highlight=wheelchair

Look at the link that links you to homepage.mac.com,

from there, you can see there are 5 links with
Testimonials that pet owners use wheel chair and their pets are very happy with that.

Also from the link above, scroll to the bottom, you can see that rabbit is on a wheel chair and he's happy.

And from one of the above link, you can see there is a duck on wheelchair, and the owner is happy, the duck is happy.

Pets live simply life, if a human can live on with a wheelchair, it is actually easier for a pet to get used to the change.

Happy Hopping thank you for a great post i have been looking for wheel chairs for rabbits since i become Honeys carer, i thought she would have to be put pts a coulpe of times with her back leg being has bad has it was, but she is doing great at the moment but things can be good 1 day then bad the next.
Bunnies i am so sorry to hear beenie is not getting better, i read your tread on montys site about your grandma you are going though a lot all at the same time, i know how bad it gets for the bunnies who is wet all the time has honey was wet for over 2 months but since she has been sprayed she has started to stay dry but her hock is still not healing to well, it is heart breaking to watch any animal suffer but you are doing a great job just keep up the good work.

Carts for Buns!

Folks we are the proud owners of a little guy who fought against all the odds. He like Beebie and Honey had a problem (tested positive for EC, but not 100% if this was the cause) which caused him to lose the use of his backlegs (right one is the worst). Search the web to find some way to give him mobility and found buns in carts. So off went (Feb 2005) and got him fitted out - he hasnt look back since. We had go through some tough times when he was really bad - went from 2.5kg to 1.7kg, wouldnt eat tried everything baby food, some specialist revive food - finally got him eating again and he is now back to 2.3kg. PTS was always an option, but it was always the last option as he always showed no sign of giving up! Plus like your selves he loves his half brother and vice-versa and we did know what we would do if the worse was to happen.

He still needs a bath every day (some days he is ok and not wet). Things we have learnt looking after him are:

1. Bandaged his feet and put on baby socks to keep the urine off as nuch as poss - at one point lost a lot of fur off his feet due to urine burn
2. Changed from vaseline as protection to babies nappy rash cream. This doesnt clodge his fur and wash off easily in the morning.
3. Use baby extra mild shampoo for him.
4. Got Profleece (like vet bed) which we put in a 4 x 3 run in which they sleep over night.
5. Express his bladder in the morn and at bedtime to keep down the urine.

Really hope everything goes ok. Below are some pics of Woolley.

Hi
Woolley has the cart on during the day from morning to night then he goes into his run with Thumper. We started him off slowly in the cart and built up the time, he is able to eat and have his snoozes.
In the mornings we give Woolley a bath and when we approach the garage where he lives with Thumper live he gets all excited and starts to get fidgety and when we put him in his cart and place him on the floor Woolley shoots off. Woolley loves being in the garden and when its time for him to go home in the evening we have to chase him to catch him.
For the blow flies we have been using a spray called XENEX which is natural and doesn't contain any chemical insecticides or any synthetic materials. We get this from the vets.

Paul, Carla, Woolley & Thumper

I saw your pics early on & i must say well done to you both, i know now if things ever got so bad again with Honey & it ever come to her using the wheel cart i would give it ago, your bunny looks so happy, well done on all your good work :D :D :D

Thanks for your kind words. It times like tonight in the garden. Thumper and Woolley were allowed out till 20.30!! (with us on guard duty). The little fellow was there doing bunny spins in his cart (little leaps in the air) actually getting the wheels off the ground. When you see him enjoying life it makes it all so worth while. I'm just so pleased we found a way for him to be as happy as possible.
