  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Duphapen

I used injectable pencillin with Zeus but don't remember which one. I used metacam and probiotics as well and he didn't have any gut problems!

But my vet said it was dangerous and made sure I understood the risks first. I had to give it once a week, subcut.

Hiya,

I don't think it's that Duphapen is dangeous, it's because it hasn't been approved for rabbits yet, therefore there are no guildlines.

When Buster was ill, I had to demand his meds as the treatment they were giving him wasn't working and someone advised me of an alternative, the meds I had him put on was "unsafe for bunnies" and it did upset his gut (but probotics sorted that out), the meds that I'd insited he was given diod actually clear up the problem and he's not had any eye puss for months now.

I would tell you vet that you want to put him on the meds and don't take no for an answert, had I not of been adamant then Buster would have to of been PTS by now.
