Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

testicles...

I got a new boy, when my other buck sadley died. I have owned and breed rabbits for 5 years and never come across this problem. He is a year and 2 months now, and he still hasnt developed his other testicle, I thought maybe after 6 months or so it will but i waited and it hasn't? Any one else had this before?

I had it in one of my buns the testical was there just did'nt drop when the vet castrated him he found it and took it away!

It sounds like your bun has what's called unilateral cryptorchidism, where one testicle doesn't descend into the scrotum. It's actually one of the more common congenital "defects" of the testicles, and so far as I know, most unilateral cryptorchids are both virile and fertile. So I don't see why he couldn't be a stud buck, personally. ;)

There is a genetic component to it though...so it's possible that you may get babies down the road with the same condition. Also, I know that in dogs, the retained testicle is prone to tumors. I assume the same is possible in rabbits as well.

Could you have him semi-castrated then? So you could still breed from him, but he didn't get ill? And would this deformity prohibit him from being shown or do judges not look 'down there'?

I just pm'd you :) Usually vets recommend removing the retaining testicle because there is a possibility it could cause problem (e.g. become cancerous) but he should still be able to stud with just one I would think. Best thing is probably to chat with your vet about it.

You may want to do a little research on the heritability of the condition also. I would hate for you to have to have to put multiple babies through the surgery, as I imagine it could be quite stressful and expensive.
