Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

~Water Rats~

I know these sounds like an unusual posting. But a breeder I know had all her baby buns killed by a water rat last week. The kits had fur and where out of the nest. I have had this myself before where I went into the shed one morning to find one of the babies killed. Thinking it might have been the mother I separated mother and babies (as kits where eating solids) for one night. The next morning I went down again to find two more had been killed. Getting more upset I searched the hutch to discover a big hole at the back where the rat had chewed its way in. It looked like the rat had gotten into the rabbit house somehow and chewed its way into the cage. We called a pest pro in to make sure that the rat had gone and he said it could have been a water rat – as they are known to kill small pet animals including rabbits. We knocked down the whole shed so we could rebuild it again making it rat proof.

Have any of you experienced this?

How awfull for u i can only say that it is a good idea to rutenly put down poisen for rats and mice, dont wait untill u know they are about. Also the obvious keep your food out of reach of rodents and keep the shed clean of spilled food. val :(

This happened to me years ago as I no longer breed - I only have Toby :) but it happened to a friend breeder and it just triggered some nasty memories :( I will pass on your advice to her.

I also just wanted to make other people aware if they were not already.
