CT scan

Zigzag

Alpha Buck
My bunny really suffered in the heat, and didn’t eat for some time. He got a CT scan last week, and I got the results today. Does anyone have experience of 2-4?

Thanks in advance to Joeyandboo who has previously provided expertise and support x

My bun had a CT scan at the RVC last week, and they found the following issues. He’s 12 tomorrow.

1. Minor spurs coming up, mild dental changes
2. Bad respiratory issues. This has always been an issue, but much worse than we thought. Has an abscess on right lung.
3. The inner right nostril is partly gone due to the respiratory issue
4. The soft tissue on the muscles - there are mineral changes and calcium build up
5. Ear wax build up

They’re prioritising the respiratory issue as a priority.

Thanks

I had Bigwig who had a abscess/tumour in her lung, we didn't get as far as CT as she wasn't coping, she was obviously struggling to breathe and distressed. She had X ray and lung wash with cardiac ultrasound and we was making plans for CT and the plan was potentially operate to remove the mass and affected lung lobe (this was at a specialist). She was on high dose Metacam, furosemide, baytril and penicillin injections but went downhill so was taken back for X rays at the specialist and showed her lungs were very damaged so we opted to PTS sadly. Sorry I haven't got a better outcome, I hope your rabbit is coping ok and there is palliative options

I've no experience of this either, but want to add my vibes and best wishes for your bunny x

Rudy had an abscess in his lung. He had noisy breathing. It was something he lived with and died with (not of). There's not much more I can recall except we were aware of it for at least a year and it didn't change and wasn't considered life threatening.

If I remember rightly, calcium in tissue is not uncommon especially in older rabbits.

I had a rabbit with a calcified lung. Managed fine, including regular GAs for dentals. Died of something unrelated age over 9 years. Only has X-rays - no CT scan.

2- yes, in a few Rabbits. Not uncommon with chronic Pasteurellosis and often an incidental finding on a PM

4- Yes secondary to a Cancerous tumour in the abdomen

Hi all,

I’m so sorry for the delay, I struggle to respond on my phone! But I’m grateful for your responses, especially as I’m not often on this forum. After the initial shock, I feel a bit better, just very sad.

Liz- sorry to hear what happened to bigwig- so they weren’t sure if it was a tumour or abscess? RVC are pretty sure it’s an abscess and the first option is to find out what the bacteria is, and administer a long course of antibiotics- I think this will be around 3 months. So I think there are some palliative options

Bunny buddy and Shimmer- thanks for sharing your experiences too, useful to know that both your bunnies managed fine [emoji4]
I am aware Zigzag is rather old at 12 though

I think calcification is common, he just seems to have it all over. And I can’t find much info on it at all- so if anyone knows more, let me know

Here he is on his birthday btw! Just for Joey&Boo

(The cake had 12!)

Thank you Omi! Have attached one of my favourite photos of him below [emoji3590]. He looks good for his age but is sadly very thin now.

He’s now on gabapentin alongside tramadol and metacam.

The bacteria that caused the issue is called pseudomonas aeruginosa, and he’ll be on a 6 week course of marbocyl.

I’ve been told to nebulise him twice a day. With him and Winnie’s eye issues I don’t think we’ll be going away again!

Thanks to you all for your support.
