  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Caring for a rabbit with heart problems

Jelly has heart issues, she was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago and she is on frusol and pimobendan. The vet says she’s ok, a little underweight which I’m working on. Has anyone else had a rabbit with heart problems and found anything else that helps? I worry about her quality of life sometimes but whenever I speak to the vet they say she’s ok

I have had several Rabbits with various forms of heart disease. Is the Vet monitoring Jelly’s renal function ? Renal problems can be a secondary issue with some heart problems. Renal problems can result in weight loss/ being underweight.

In this hot weather you will need to be very, very careful about keeping her cool and well hydrated. Her Frusol dose might need to be altered too.

There are other medications which can be used as well as the ones she is on, but it depends on the specific type of heart problem. Most types do worsen over time, so drug changes/ drug dose changes might be required. If your Vet does Home Visits this is a huge benefit to avoid the stress travelling can cause to most Rabbits. Minimising all types of stress, both psychological and physiological, is obviously needed for any Rabbit with a heart problem.
