  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit not improving

My rabbit has had runny eyes on and off for a while now, always relatively controlled, initially I thought it was down to bedding etc, dust....but I notice now she has a slight white discharge in the eye, and also her nose is quite pink (she normally has quite a dark nose) she went to the vet a week ago and was given drops for conjunctivitus, but they dont seem to have done much for her...I am booked in for another appt on Saturday (earliest) and ideas suggestions as to what this could be etc, and any ideas what I could try to help her, she also has quite soft stools, again this as been on and off recently which I put down to her diet , despie being few changes..now beginning to think this could be connected to the eye issue??

Chronic runny eyes are often related to Dental problems, ie elongated tooth roots. The tooth roots press on the nasolacrimal ducts, blocking them and preventing tear drainage. Secondary infection can set in causing conjunctivitis. Soft stools can be related to Dental problems too, usually the result of not eating enough hay. I would expect the Vet to investigate possible Dental problems, including skull ragiographs to assess the tooth roots.

Great advice from Jane I can't add anymore but I hope the vet visit goes well and they can sorry the problem out :)

Sorry to hear about your bunny and hope Saturday's vet visit goes well, and I agree about potential dental issues. Let us know how he gets on, good luck.
