Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dislocated hip

Bugs&Beau

New Kit
Hi, I posted a while ago about my bun Holly losing use of her legs and treating her for e.cuniculli, she recovered well but a couple of weeks ago her left leg went ‘floppy’ so I took her back to the vets and they thought she could have dislocated her knee joint.
She went in for her x rays yesterday and it’s her hip, the ball and socket joint have completely come away and the ball part looked to me like it was facing the wrong way.
I am waiting for the vet to speak with other vets and an orthopedic surgeon as to what can be done for Holly. My vet said he had never seen bones quite like it, and the other hip had grown in a strange way too.
We discussed popping it back in but he doesn’t know the extent of the damage to surrounding nerves/muscles etc so doesn’t think it’s an option.
Another option I suggested was amputation but he said as rabbits are quite back heavy she might not do so well with that, so I’m waiting to see what else he suggests at the moment.
She is home and on Metacam twice a day for the pain.
Does anyone else have any experience with this? Thanks 😊

I've had a tripod bun before (front leg). They umanage fine normally. I would be very reluctant to amputate a back leg if the remaining one wasn't 100%, although that would depend on what other options were available and how well the rabbit is coping. I hope the orthopods come up with something to help.

Sorry can't offer any advice, as I've no experience of this. I really hope the vets and orthopaedic surgeon can come up with a plan for Holly, sending lots of vibes xx

I am sorry to hear of Holly’s problems. As Shimmer mentioned, I would be very reluctant to opt for amputation if the other hip is not 100% ‘ healthy’. I know of a Rabbit who had a total hip replacement with a good outcome. The Rabbit was very young though, with no other health problems.

Hopefully an Orthopaedic Specialist will have a viable plan to help Holly.
