Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My sweet girl has gone | My old girl is winding down

I hope the additional dosage helps Lily to enjoy her life for a good while to come. Sending lots of vibes for your brave girl xx

Just a quick update from me. Illy has been doing really well since having her Gabapentin dose increased to three times a day! AND for the first time in months, her eye pressures are SO good. One eye is in normal range and the other is just over normal range (<20). So we're thrilled with that, plus she's been much more mobile and able to get herself up if she falls over. I guess for future reference, in case anyone's buns have high intra-ocular pressure, you may need to persist with eye drops and higher pain relief than expected, for longer, before seeing improvement.

She was having a routine check-up today and as I was getting ready this morning, I thought to myself "wow she's been having such a good few weeks, I can't wait to hear what the vet thinks". Of course, I jinxed it! My partner informed me that Illy fell twice this morning and wasn't interested in food. She had a nibble of some dandelion root, but that was it. The vet is concerned she's having an EC flare up as her neurological signs seem worse, but she has quite the laundry list of issues so it really could be anything. To be on the safe side, she's staying overnight at the vets for some supportive care. Hopefully, this overnight stay will do the trick and she'll be home tomorrow. It's so quiet and strange without her being here. Usually at this time of night, she's gently snoring, or pottering about.

Lilly will be home again and you will have the sweet happiness of home , and I am sending so many vibrations for her xxx

Oh When I started to read your latest update I was so happy. But to go on to hear that she has had a bit of a relapse is a worry. I really hope that there will have been some improvement overnight x

Really sorry to hear that Lily has had a bit of a relapse after such a good episode. Sending loads of vibes that the vet stay can help her get back home very soon xx

Thank you all for the vibes and the love

I'm not coming with a great update :( The vets decided to keep Illy in for another night, but asked us to come see her this afternoon. She's eating, pooping and showing interest in things and is stable, but the vet is concerned about her quality of life, as she's quite sedentary/immobile. They were suggesting PTS today, but my gut tells me to bring her home. They're going to keep her in again tonight (Saturday) and wean her off the opioid they've been giving her, so she can come home with me Sunday afternoon. Then the plan is to see whether she improves once home and if not, arrange for a home visit PTS. It wouldn't be with our vets, which really sucks, but they're not doing any home-visits due to covid. Obviously if they're unable to wean her off the opioid by tomorrow, then we'll be facing a much sooner decision.

I honestly can't stop crying. When is the tipping point for quality of life? I don't want to wait until she's completely miserable, but I also don't want to rush things. As soon as I offered her a dandelion root at the vets, she was straight into it and nibbled away quite happily. And that gave me hope.. or at least confidence that she still has some zest. But is that enough for her to be happy?

I'm sorry the news isn't more positive for Illy. I think you are right to want to take her home to be able to judge properly how she is. Sending lots of vibes for her and also lots of hugs for you.

You know her best. Could she be more sedentary at vets because of opioids or stress.
Sending vibes she can come home soon.

Thank you, this is what I was/am for hoping too.

She's home, which has been a joy. She's not doing great though, so I truly don't know if she'll last a week. She's booked in to see the vet on Wednesday for another QoL review, then back in again on Monday with our usual (and favourite) vet. I'm hoping we can keep her comfortable and happy until Monday's appointment, as selfishly that would help me as it would be with the vet who knows her best. That being said, I know all the vets there have her wellbeing at heart.

Since being home she has groomed *furiously*, which has been sweet and funny to watch. I can just imagine her saying "get this vet smell off me". She's also been annoyed at me over-petting her, so I'm glad she's still feeling sassy. She's been eating some dandelion root and other forage and has made it to the litter box.

However, she's fallen a couple of times and hasn't really tried to get up. She's definitely a lot less steady on her feet than she was last week and generally seems frailer. She seems very tired. I hope that with some good rest and meds tonight, she may be brighter tomorrow and the week ahead. But I am trying to prepare myself for her passing :(

I ideally would like a home PTS, but all the ones I've been googling so far seem to specialise in cats and dogs. I really want her to have the absolute smoothest and kindest passing possible, so I want someone who knows rabbits well. If anyone has any recommendations for North London, I'd be very grateful. If needed, we'll take her to the vets, where I know they'll treat us all with respect and kindness.

I know the end of our journey on this earth together is coming to an end soon. I am so grateful for 12 years with her. But goodness it's not long enough.

Sending lots of hugs . I had to say goodbye to my old lady Mouse last month - I'd quite honestly been waiting for some definable moment that would give me clarity in assessing her Q of L but she just battled on in a fally apart v slowly way, the brave soul  Someone on here said gradual deterioration is the most difficult & I felt that. When we said goodbye I was comforted that her last days she still ate well & enjoyed some comforts & interaction. i hope illy gives you a few more special moments. I'd actually chose my not as savvy local vet over the brilliant practice I prefer, because they give a sedative & that sleepy relaxed time to say goodbye I really treasured x
